Recommend me some security

Specifically for my garage door

Well, with the amount of theft and attempted theft threads on here of late, I guess the chav scum are out and about stocking up on this years xmas presents to each other. (I hope all those who have had something dissapear recently are suitably re compensed, or ideally get your stuff back)

I realise of course the most determined thief will get more or less anything, but in order to stop your usual low IQ crowbar weilding hoodie opportunist the harder it is to take the better.

So, I have all the usual suspects, chain, alarm+immobiliser, disk lock (and who'd forget the trusty ignition lock....) But am in need of something to beef up the garage door, which has a rather pathetic looking padlock on a bolt into the frame attched at current.

Ideally Im after something that bolts to the floor that physically stopping the door opening (its an up and over type)

What do you all use??? / Any recommendations?

I hear that the garage defenders are a bad idea.

It just says "expensive stuff in here worth nicking".

Get big badass sliding bolts on either side of the garage door near the bottom. Way more subtle.

Use an Almax chain, and a good ground anchor.

The garage door deadbolt type efforts are pretty good. I specificaly didn't go for a garage defender for reasons of obvious bling, and that you can't open them from inside.

saunderson security sell them for about £20 a pair, assuming the frames reasonably robust they should do well.

Deadbolts on the inside of the door - either bolting vertically into the ground, or horizontally either side of the door into the frame etc

I've said a few times about a mate that made a sort of safe mechanism on his door that had 6bolts working off a centeral point, and going all round the door.

At my house we have 2bolts that come off the door and onto the frame. They are tight enough to stop the door been pushed in and on the inside so they can't be pulled out, and that is along with the car been put right up to the door. We can get to our garage from the kitchen though.

A guy down my street uses 2 lengths or rebar about 3ft long going through the bottom of his door and into the concrete slab to stop any movement.

Security depends on money unfortunately.

to get to my bike on a night, you'd have to:

- get passed the first big gate (Paxton access control + 2x HD Maglocks)
- get passed 1x CCTV camera pointing at the gate, 1x down the side of the house, and 1x pointing at the garage entrance
- get passed the security lights without setting them off (as they shine into my bedroom they wake me up)
- Passed the second Gate with a hefty padlock on it
- manage to move my car from infront of the garage door
- then get passed the Maglock + Keypad, then Padlock on the garage door
- then passed the alarm on the garage (well, house alarm with door contact + PIR in garage linked)
- then cut the big chain connected to the ground anchor
- without being seen on the 2x IR Camera's in the garage pointing at my bike


but if you can do that... i dont put the steering lock on, and there's nearly a full tank of petrol to help you on your way. and the bikes insured - so i'm happy.

My father didn't go for the garage defender type things but put 2 eye bolts either side of the door at the bottom and then ran a length of square metal bar through them. Secured at either end with locks through the bar.

OK if you can get the metal bar, he just happened to have some or know where to get it, as fathers generally do.

It seemed to work but a bit of a faff, ok when you got into the routine.

That said it's an external garage and scrotes did break through the roof to get what they wanted.

Old adage if someone wants to nick it they'll find a way. Best you can do is to make it as hard as possible so they find something easier/quicker.

Thanks, Its an external garage so inside only things arent an option, TBH Its not in great condition, to the point where i reckon enough force in the right place would see one of the walls coming down.

So was really going for a deterrent, but seeing opinions on here and the rest of tinterweb the consensus seems to be avoid the defender thingy due to how conspicuous they are, may try a few deadbolts into the door frame though...... once ive re attcahed the frme securley to the blockwork ha!

i cannot access the inside of my garage from the house, the only way in or out is the garage door itself. i have a large dead bolt going deep into the brick of the house with a boron carbide lock on it, circular motion. also have infra red cameras pointing at the drive and door as well as the back of the house.
then the steering lock and ground anchor plus alarmed bike and house with garage door switch, good luck to them.

i must admit i have seen alot of my bikes been nicked threads also

i say this for all of us...

I would recommend a Digital baby monitor, weird in your garage. This can be then placed somewhere appropriate at home, like in your bedroom at night.

Alongside garage boor dead bolts, they cost about £25 and won't be obvious from the outside. They secure either side of the garage door, by throwing a bolt 6" down in to the ground.

Probably a simple garage door infra alarm also. Even if it's not too loud, your baby monitor will pick it up.
