Hi

We have finally got around to getting another car. Needed something to tow the bike trailer and replace the old Alfa 155 (the 156 has very little low down power and wouldn't make a good tow car).

We have landed up with this.

02 reg one, 48k on the clocks. Black leather. 2.5 V6 manual (so 4wd with these).

Cool, I remember Top Gear testing the diesel one and it was pretty good. My dad has an S Type which is basically a ford on the inside but the V6 is pretty good

Hi

Price wise they are a bargain for what you get. This is the 2.5 V6 so has just under 200hp and has 4wd which is pretty unobtrusive. And no cam belts to worry about. The diesels have dual mass flywheels, so a large bill waiting to happen.

Needed something for towing and which Charlotte can use driving over the peaks to work in winter.

Not this weekend (what show?).

Very smooth, but steering is a bit slow and lacking feel, while the handling is a bit stodgy.

No cabin shots yet. Fairly stock though with dark carpets and black leather (would have preferred the black half leather, or better still a decent cloth interior, but the first is fairly rare while the full cloth X type interiors are horrible).

Driven a few in my car hire days and they were decent enough, can't really remember any problems we had with them on fleet when they were new and I got from swansea to cardiff 6 minutes before the stupid boy racer who thought he was a god driving a celica that left at the same time.

Think the claim is that only about 15% of parts are shared (suspect that is mainly switches, sensors, etc), but no doubt plenty of other bits are very similar but not shared. There was no 4wd Mondeo of anything like that age. V6 Mondeos are not that common, while all the petrol X Types use a V6.

An MX5 is tempting, but wouldn't pull the bike trailer and even if it did I couldn't get leathers / paddock stand / lid / tools / etc in the boot.

The 156 has about 138k on it at the moment, but having just had a new cam belt and clutch I am hoping it will last another couple of years and get to 170k fairly easily. However once it comes up for being replaced I am very tempted to go for something whimsical, such an an MX5, Elise or MR2.

Looks nice, I don't like old Jaguars really although the XJS was interesting, those newer ones do look good though when compared to a BMW or Audi. It's all well and good calling it a Mondeo purely because it was owned by Ford, Volvo are too but they don't get lumped with that, the design and engineering teams usually remain on established brands it's just an ownership change.

What beach is that Keith? Seems a great place to take pics, can't think of any down south that you can drive onto. (with sand) Smile Or without someone telling you off..

You're probably not allowed to drive on that beach, Keith always takes his vehicles places you're not supposed to, beaches, potato fields, where ever he fucking well pleases.

It's all just part of being the oracle, he can do what he wants.

We paid £3750 with just under a years MOT and a years tax on it. That is a 2002 car, but with 48k on the clocks and very clean but a private sale. Looked at few more. For example one at a dealer had ~70k on the clocks and was a bit cheaper (£4k, but with a "this weekend only" sale price of £3.5k) but it was a fair bit tattier (nothing major) and needed a really good valet, plus had cream leather interior that would have been a really silly idea if I am lightly to drive it with dirty hands. Also a few for sale with very high mileages (one locally going for a bit over £2k with 210k on the clocks).

The basic architecture is from the Mondeo. Claim I have seen is only about 15% of bits are carried over, and all the early X types were 4wd and all the petrol ones used a V6 engine. Nothing too obvious shared though (maybe electric window switches and things like that).

As an aside where we were last week someone else had one and was having problems with the boot lock. Came and asked if I had any ideas as we had the same car. Took the latch apart and the problem was the servo for the boot latch which had failed, and which was a Ford part (made by Hella).

Blackrock Sands near Porthmadog in North Wales. You can drive onto it and it is pretty quiet at this time of year. And for once virtually no jellyfish on it.
