No, a provisional licence holder cannot take a pillion at all.

"Pillion Law
Without going through all the road traffic acts, here's a brief synopsis:-
You must hold a full licence for the machine you're riding, wear a safety helmet etc.
Your Bike must be adapted to carry a pillion (a rear seat and passenger footrests).
Your pillion must wear a safety helmet, sit astride the machine facing forward (side-saddle is illegal).

There's no legal age required for riding pillion but he/she must big enough to hold on, sat astride with feet on the foot pegs (so there is a size limit) and able to fully understand the detailed instruction you will surely give".

So no, you have to hold a full licence Thumbs Up

Thought legally the pillion just has to sit astride the bike, no indication of which direction they should be facing?

MUST FACE THE FRONT.
But if their head is on backwards then this may be open to conjecture.

Our instructors on the DAS course would have fun with this part of the show me tell me question training.

"Tell me how you would instruct someone riding pillion" or something like that.

He would then go on to say "Imagine I had never ridden before"

When it got to the part where the student said "get on the bike" he would do just that, get on the bike facing backwards.

"Should" face the front. Not must. Otherwise you couldn't have cameramen sitting on the back of bimmers filming marathons and stuff.

Typo.... Embarassed

Come to mention it, I believe it to be the most daring sport in the world.

'Rearward Facing Pillion-ing' (With your open eye glued to a view finder).
