I know a few of us on here are into photography so I thought I'd ask your opinions on a sigma 24-70 EX DG lens...does anyone have one? and what's it like?

Hi

I have one. Picture quality is fine, but it is quite slow focusing. However the price is a bargain compared to the Canon 24-70 f2.8.

If you have a small sensor camera then think the Tamron equivalent is meant to be pretty good.

All the best

Keith

Hunts a bit in low light but decent enough for the money.

Thanks for the reply's guys! Indeed I wanted it for the f2.8 low light for doing hand held indoor work like weddings and the such and i think the uber telephoto would only work if i could only get 60 feet away or more lol!

I bought the sigma last week for my 40D but tbh the couple of portrait shoots I have done I've found it is very very soft...kinda out of focus soft even if i go up to f11 Shocked

The slow focus and low light comments I kind of get round by using a flash with focus assist light that seems to work well so far BUT and this is my other question......even when working out doors it locks on focus pretty quick normally in good light however it takes AGES to take a shot? Hit the button..focus ...about half a second tops .....get the focus confirmation beep from my camera and then maybe a 4 second delay and take a shot!!!!!!! I ended up ditching the sigma lens for portrait work last sunday due to these reasons and stuck with the cheapo but great nifty fifty f1.8 just because I know it works. So I guess It's not a camera front or backwards focus problem?

Also a friend of mine at work bought the same lens for his nikon and has the same out of focus issue Rolling Eyes

Any ideas fellas?

Not sure about now, but Sigma did go through a stage of having some quality control issues (i.e. take two identical lens models and they don't perform to the same standard).

might be a issue with the contacts my Tamron 17-50 2.8 did similar, (would focus then over correct) on holiday and taking it on and off a few times sorted it.

but yeah sigma Q control can still be a bit hit and miss

What you need, of course, is a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 and a Canon 24-70mm f2.8 (assuming you're on Canon, obviously). Those two would be ideal for weddings, I'd have thought.

I used to have both too Crying or Very sad

Will have a go at cleaning the contacts later...good idea Wink
and Silver I do use (not mine I might ad) a 17-40L series and a 24-105L...the latter is f4 granted but the IS does help a lot to bring it near as damn it f2ish in low light....only thing is if anyone is moving then you still get the blur!!!

I was a little dissapointed in the sigma as I've only ever bought one EX series lens from them before..a 10-20mm and thats just a superb lens!

My brother has the tameron version on his 40D and swears by it.
I've got a 24-105 welded to my 5D. For weddings I'd be tempted by a 24-70 f2.8 on one camera and my sigma 50 f1.4 on another.

As for you sigma, take it back to where you got it from and either get it replaced or checked out.

I had a 24-105mm f4 too - I loved that lens (it's about half the weight of the 24-70mm f2.8 and more versatile!).
