My ninja is been declared a cat c and i now have the cheque for the"market value", it had a new mot and tax a couple of months ago.

Do i need to notify any gestapo types/get bits of paper or can i go about my business without trouble from the law?

I never did with my TDM; to my knowledge Cat C is just cosmetic anyway, and the guy I bought it off had replaced the top fairing, etc. and had receipts to prove.

When I sell it I'll declare it as a Cat C in the ad just to be straight up, but I don't think you need to let the powers that be know.

I checked the DVLA web-site on this a while back, as a CB125 I have was declared Cat C when I got it. Seems that its a flag on the DVLA Data-Base set by a notification from the Insurance company, and is 'Cleared' when a new MOT cert is issued.
I presume that after accident, you've fixed the bike and re-tested it, so its road legal, only 'niggle' may be that if the Insurance co have notified DVLA of the Cat-C AFTER you got your MOT done, its tripped the flag, which may put you in an akward situation, effectively nulling the MOT cert, so coppa might give you a tug for it, presuming you are riding a bike thats been 'written off' and not been ficed & tested, with consequent argument over the actual dates of when it was physically written off by damage, and when it was financially written off by the bean-counters....
If you dont WANT the argument, I think I'd call the DVLA and ask what the status was on your V5, and IF the Cat-C flag was set, and IF the MOT you passed AFTER it was fixed is now invalidated, and whether they can reset the flag, on the information you have provided, that the bike was fixed and tested imedietly after damage was incurred, & the write-off happened only after the lag in insurers deciding on settlement, or whether you HAVE to get a new MOT to re-set it and be in the clear.
Or you could just spend £30 of settlement and get a new MOT to be sure....

As far as I am aware all you need to do with a Cat C is get another MOT. If selling then you will obviously have to inform people that it was registered as a cat C.

If the MOT was done before the crash just get the bits fixed and take it back to the test for another one.

on a cat c car it will have to go for a vic check at dvla but with a bike this is not always the case it depends if its flagged with dvla for vic you can check this online
if it does need a vic check then you have to re mot it 1st then book in for vic check they check the frame and engine numbers as long as there right and not tampered with or changed your good to go

For Bikes you don't even need a new MOT I believe.

My SV650S was a Category C write off in the June accident, fixed it in 3 days from it's return and back on the road. Thumbs Up.

My car has been cat c twice, it doesn't need a new MOT until the old one runs out and as it is a bike it doesn't need a VIC check.

Tell your insurance companies from now on about both the claim (even if non fault) AND the cat C on the bike; they will do anything to wriggle out of paying in the event of an claim.

AFAIK a private individual selling a Cat C vehicle has no legal obligation to inform potential owners that the vehicle has been an insurance loss.

Might be wrong in saying that, but that's what I was told some years ago.

But in the intrests of honesty when selling its best to declare it, to avoid a sticky situation later on down the line.

VIC doesn't apply to bikes at all.
