Its a good movie, but its not the greatest of all time. The plot is thin, the dubbing is terrible, the drug theme is ropey, Roper can't actually do Karate, and the Kiwi is in it for about 30 seconds.

The fighting is OK, although there are better fight scenes in later movies, and other Bruce Lee films but there are three things that make this film great:

1.) Williams

2.) Mr Han

3.) Roper - despite the fact that he can barely lift his legs above his waist.

The Bruce Lee character isn't really a character but more of a caricature of Bruce himself.

That sounds like I'm doing the movie down, and I'm totally not. Its one of my favourites and eminently quotable, but there are better movies around that could be considered to be the greatest movie of all time.

The correct response to my above post is, of course:

"Man, you come right out of a comic book!"

I've still yet to see The 5 Deadly Venoms, the Wu-tang intro from Chessboxin' took me to the movie. Looks like a great Kung-Fu flick.

I've seen the one in the OP, that Chung-Lee still intimidates me, scary looking mother. And funnily enough i was watching the Lee vs Norris fight from Way Of The Dragon a few days back on Youtube. Brilliant. Smile

Do you reckon Bruce Lee would of been caught up in all this CGI martial art film comedy/action (i.e Jackie Chan)?

Actually, the correct response would be:

"Bullshit Mister Han man"

Laughing

You missed a few items from your list of what makes it so great:

Quote:

1.) Williams

2.) Mr Han

3.) Roper - despite the fact that he can barely lift his legs above his waist.

4) The soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin (which i just happen to have on LP). Especially when Williams' flashback starts and the theme tune goes all waccy-waccy wah-wah guitar in a funky soul brother stylee.

5) Williams

6) Bolo (Dah!)

7) O'Hara - especially the fight when Lee kills him and does the whole aaaaaaaaah-huuuuuuurgh telegraphed sidekick. That sound was used at the start of 'Way of the Exploding Fist' on the C64. That game is the best game of ever. I am invincible at that game.

8) Williams

9) Roper

10) Williams

Did i mention Williams?

Hands up who noticed the very brief appearances of Jackie Chan during the film? According to his (Chan's) autobiography, Lee got it a bit wrong in one of the fight sequences and actually knocked him out!

As my style is fighting-without-fighting, i won't bother busting some moves on anyone who dares to disagree with EtD's epic status - instead i'll just set Freddie's goons on you.
Freddie says it's for your own good.

"Its the doh, Roper or we gotta break somethin'!"

I think that Bloodsport is actually a slightly better film. Sure, its got the Van Damme in it, but the fights are good and its got Bolo in it.

Definitely agree that Aliens is a very fine movie indeed also given the technology that made it. Enter the Dragon is a definitely a classic but not 'great' IMHO. It is in the same category for me as most of the Spagetti Westerns, all classics, but now showing their age.

Also in my top 10 I would have:

300
The Hurt Locker
Officer and a Gentleman
Star Wars
Ink

...any other votes of the greatest movie

I thought 300 & Hurt Locker were very very overrated, more so
Hurt Locker.

My all time, probably:

Back To The Future /2
Godfather
Mad Max /2
Predator
Alien/2
Saving P Ryan
Big.
Terminator, T2
Scarface
Stand by Me
The Warriors
Goodfellas
Casino
The Truman Show
Braveheart
Gangs Of New York
Shawshank
City Of God
28 Days Later

And a bunch of Stallone/Arnie movies are some of the best in the genre i.e Cliffhanger, Total Recall, Demolition Man.

Only because of all the attention it was getting. 6 Oscars does seem a little much. I enjoyed it but felt like one of /those/ films where it's really over hyped. There's nothing in that film that stands out. But i as above, i did enjoy it.

I knew someone would mention Cliffhanger so that's why i made sure i mentioned 'in that genre' Mr. Green

No, wrong.

This follows the rule of poor sequels. BTTF was a good film, and 2 and 3 were just cash-ins on that. Don't make me start pointing out all the holes in BTTF2.

It's about time travel. It's always going to be a Paradox. Therefore the film is one big hole - you should just sit back and enjoy.
BTTF2 had hoverboards in, nuff said.

Anyway, I'd suggest the actual answer:

Aliens is great but it's not the greatest ever. My list (in no particular order) would have to include:

Pulp Fiction
The Usual Suspects
Fight Club
Reservoir Dogs
Se7en
Layer Cake
Godfather
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Surely you know of the odd numbered Star Trek curse (i.e. the even numbered films are good and the odd numbered ones are crap?). It's a scientific fact!
