Don't opt for the cheapest low output model that you can find as you will, in the future, almost certainly want to use it to run power tools and maybe even boil a kettle every now and then.

FWIW both toolstation and screwfix (part of B&Q) both do 650W gens for about £90 (click text for link). I can't vouch for the noise level though (the toolstation one quotes Sound pressure 68dB, level 94dB). Maybe put in a polystyrene lined box and poke the exhaust through a hole in the wall?

Around here you might pick up old ones at farmers auctions/autojumbles/car boots etc. However, I'd always prefer to go shop bought for the sake of a guarantee (can't have the hassle of yet another thing to fix if it goes wrong).

HTH Thumbs Up

I've got a little 650W gennie, and it would cope with most things, although the angle grinder was a little slower than when it was plugged into the mains. The only thing I found it wasn't really any good for was running a mig off of it. Everything else pretty much worked ok, and I could run a drill, tv, lighting etc all the time without much hassle

I got it for £30 at a discount at B&Q (it had lost a foot). Definitely not the quietest of generators though, but I think quietness will cost.

Edit: 650W not 750W.

If you just want to run lights and a radio, I'd say go for a motorhome leisure battery and some 12v lights. Stick it on a little trolley so you can take it home to recharge easily.

Get a battery powered radio Smile.

I was thinking it'd be a paraffin heater.

Hmmm, I love the smell of paraffin in the morning.

5 megawatts would definitely power a kettle!

I got a 3.2KW genny from Aldi for £150, not the quietest thing, about average volume for a generator. I got it in one of those weekly deal thing Lidl/Aldi do.
