So lets say you were to buy a cheap hack and then packed up some stuff and headed over the waters to europe to spend a few weeks/months touring around untill the bike packs up. Can you just simply abandon the bike for the local salvage or something and make your way back?

As i understand it you need to take your V5 etc through customs so would you have any issue coming back into the country with no bike?

I only ask as the one worry that keeps popping up when thinking of such a big trip is using your main bike and something going wrong.

Cheers
A

Hi

Irrespective of customs issues, the DVLA would have your soul (the DVLA are worse than the devil). You can no longer declare a bike scrap yourself so you would be liable for tax / SORN for it for ever.

All the best

Keith

In reality after a certain age, they stop pursuing it.

I've got a 98 bike that hasnt run in years that isnt declared sorn, and they havent tried to fine me for a year or two.

They never tried to fine me for a 94 bike I had.

Hi

Long enough off the road and it is pre SORN.

Trouble is that now should they take you to court the fine is rather higher (although at least the DVLA don't get it). Eventually they will get nasty at some point.

All the best

Keith

Can't you declare it permanently exported?

Probably the easiest solution.

Are you sure about not scrapping it Keith? I've scrapped four cars myself over last couple of years, just fill in the V5C & post it off. You get a nice letter back thanking you for advising them & that's the end of it. Why should bikes be different?

Hi

Changed for cars and bikes just recently. That is why the new V5s have been launched.

All the best

Bring the bike to me I will take it off your hands and give you a lift to the Airport in Limoges as fair exchange... Wink

I will need the V5c document and a signature from you saying you have sold it to me for the price of the lift to Limoges. Job done.
