I don't make a habit of promoting a product but I think I should in this case...

I had problems with my Chinese chain last week as I'd neglected it a bit. I cleaned it with paraffin (or kerosene if you're a merkin). I shredded my hands up a bit and afterward, it didn't look any different. I did think about removing the chain and soaking it but that beyond my technical ability Smile

I went on the hunt for a suitable chain cleaner and came across this:

https://www.getgeared.co.uk/KETTENMAX_Motorcycle_Chain_Cleaner_and_Greaser

For a tad over £20 it was a bit extravagent but I decided on this one after seeing the demo video.

It arrived yesterday and I promptly strapped it to my chain and gave it a thorough clean. It's magic! It's like a bunch of toothbrushes all the way around so it cleans the whole thing. You can feed chain cleaning solution into one of the nozzles and drain it out into a container at the bottom. Afterward, you use the same process to lube it. It saved my hands getting shredded any further and the chain looks shiny and new.

I recommend this to anyone who finds chain cleaning a bit of a hassle.

I've also seen a product called 'Tirox' which is a spiral contraption which you feed onto the chain and pull it along. It's a tenner and I'm tempted to get this too - does anyone here own one of these and can you tell me what you think of it?

I haven't got one, but after seeing the vid I like the idea, but I reckon I could make one for a lot cheaper.

Project for 2011 I think. Thumbs Up

I had one ages ago and it was good but too fiddly so ended up on a shelf where it has sat ever since. I think one of these would be a better buy and cheaper too:

Now I have a Scottoiler - while it's much more expensive, it's virtually fit and forget and I know my chain is being looked after. If you're like me and lazy with chain maintenance, I'd go for the Scottoiler.

Scottoiler - I like! The ultra-lazy way to do it!

Although I can't justify £80 outlay for my Chinese 125, I might actually consider it when I get my big bike Smile

As for the 'wrench' looking cleaning tool - I actually went into my local bike shop and asked for 'a chain cleaner' - they came back with a can of spray so I had to explain to them that I wanted a device to clean the chain rather then the spray...They said they didn't have a clue what I wanted and had never stocked anything like it in the past! (I live in Wales where everything's a bit backwards - but that just takes the piss!)

Try £16 delivered for a Loobman. Note quite fit-and-forget, but pretty good for the price.

Do bear in mind that chain oilers just oil the chain. If you don't clean it off, you're creating a nice grinding paste.

Lucky you, a chain for either of my bikes will cost more than that unless I get an IRIS or some Chinese thing made of monkeymetal.

I love a gadget so a Kettenmax is on the wish list Thumbs Up

The OP's IS a cheap chinese chain. So for 22 notes he could have replaced it twice.

That maybe so but I'd rather keep it maintained than have it snap on me and rip through my leg - it will get replaced when it needs replacing and not cause I can't be arsed cleaning it!

I never said it's not worth cleaning it. Just it's not worth paying £22 for a brush to do it.

But it certainly looks like they've found their target audience. Rolling Eyes
