Does anybody know when the Fireblade first got FI? DR350s and DRZ400s seem to be trading for lots of money..... and a thought clicked into my head. Why not buy a blade and go adventure touring on that instead? With the £500ish I'd save over a DR350, I could stick a pair of wire wheels on it, swap the suspension to longer travel and replace the bottom fairing with crash bars and a metal box bash plate.

Mid 1990s and ideal street fightered blades seem to be pretty inexpensive for what you get comparede to the uber basic DR.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I'd go for an SV 650 - lighter, but still 'enough' power.

I've seen a few DRZ400s (E and S) for around £1300 - going to cost you a lot more to get a blade sorted if you want 'adventure' wheels.

How about a Cagiva Elephant 900, then doing a few bits and pieces to get it more reliable?

Or a DR600/KLR600?

Yeah 929 was the first F.I. model, though the F.I. system was not too popular.

If cost is an issue the earlier carbed models would be much better to go with.

You could pick up a good rashed 893 for not too much Thumbs Up

There's a reason there aren't any IL4 engined off road bikes. They are lumpy and hard to control at low engine speeds, increasing the rev's doesn't give much usable toque, instead they just rev and spin up. The SV is still quite revvy for a twin, but the engine and light weight would be much better suited to some mad crosser project.

You can still get a bargin DR350 for not much money, l think nath only paid a few hundread for his all though it the top end ate it self due to a previuos owners actions

They seem to go for £800-1000 on ebay with the kickstart enduro model being the better bike, far cheaper than any year fireblade which hold there value quite well.

What you've just described, is just down to gearing.

The reason IL4 engines arent used for offroad, is you dont need that much power offroad, and IL4 engines dont like being dropped and are heavy.

V-Twin engines tend to be lumpier than their four cylinder bikes at slow speeds.
Never found four cylinder bikes 'hard to control'.

However the not 'big bang' engine won't help traction in muddy stuff.

I suspect if you down geared most big bikes they'd have plenty enough rear-wheel torque for off-roading at low speeds. The stratospheric gearing of sports bikes doesn't help.

The R1 mad4it028 posted I believe finished very well on the Erzburg prologue stage.

A good reason against sports bikes, especially older ones is the width - going to make it harder to stand up and harder to adapt the bike to have a higher seat if you wanted to try that.

Oh and how about an XR400?
