Ok ok, after being impressed for the 10th time by John's acetalyne tank wood burning stove thing I fancy making one.

Will an angle grinder be good enough to cut into such a gas bottle? I'll fill them up with water first to evacuate the gas of course! Or do you need an acetalyne torch to cut through the presumably thick steel?

Have a bloke with a welder to spot weld the chimney on..

Thanks

Angle grinder is fine, but filling one up with water and leaving it for a week still didn't remove all the gas for me. I threw a match in the bottle, then it was all gone Laughing

Mine failed because I couldn't find a suitable chimney.

I've still got a large gas bottle outside but I tried many times to get the valve unscrewed without success.

Can't you just hit it with a big hammer? If it doesn't work find a bigger hammer!

Remember that the valves have a reverse thread on them.

The valve is brass and can be cut with a hacksaw.

Remember though, it CAN still spark. My mate recommends hacksawing it off under a damp teatowel but I accept no responsability for any injuries incurred.

Pic is not me but a bloke I met at the Dragon rally this year. Bit of a freaky doppleganger +20 years, -8 inches thing going on there!

Tried, didn't work. I also tried using a scaffold pole on it, but it just made the end oval shaped. I gave up after that and I've not done anything with it since. May have a bash this weekend.

Here's a picture of my poor excuse of a first one:

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00771.jpg

The door was fitted, but badly, and it also now has three chair leg chimneys that don't work.

Here's how I got the valve off:

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00765.jpg

And the stubborn one:

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00768.jpg

Also, don't do what I did which is have the metal filings firing at your kitchen window. They melt the glass, embedding themselves in it and start to rust Laughing My mum wasn't best pleased.

I thought you'd let yourself go a bit when I first saw the pic Laughing

There's loads of these on the migwelding forum. I've made a couple, the first one was terrible, the second one was much better, and is still going strong 18 months after birth. I'll try and get a picture up soon.
One tip though, use the highest temp paint you can find, you'll be suprised how hot they can get!

Edit: found the photo...

Just had a look and both my bottles had brass valves with left hand tapered threads into the bottles. Don't know if it makes a difference but they are blue and marked up as Prestogas? I just wrongly assumed that all bottles were the same.

The biggest problem I have is getting the flue / chimney. I want to put the fire in my garage and vent it outside but I can't find any pipe that is big enough and long enough. I've been told that it needs to be about 4" (100mm) in diameter?

Search the hedges around you until you find a crashed Saxo.

More seriously you might be able to get a length of suitable metal from someone that does make up aftermarket exhausts for cars. Someone like this, although the price might be high.

All the best

Use a short solid flue, then chimney liner over the top of it to take it outside.

Here's some pictures of my crap one. I was just burning an old trellis and bird table that needed taking to the tip. Not any more:

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSCF3066.jpg

As you can see, the chimneys are pathetic, the door is too big so all the flames escape from around it (plus it needs to be ajar for air flow), and generally, it's just rubbish.

Cut this little hole in the back which has improved the burn, but ideally, I need to make some form of ventilation in the bottom for the air to get up, as the heat is very much concentrated to the back...

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSCF3075-1.jpg

Tried getting the valve off my other gas bottle again but it is not budging. Checked the thread and it's standard, whacked it with a lump hammer as hard as I could and it wouldn't move.

I think that as ideas go, using an acetalyne bottle is probably quite a shit one.

Just a heads up.

Is it a bad idea to think about making one to go in a first floor flat?

John says first of all cut the handle bit off with a grinder.

You can then get to the valve and remove it with a big spanner.

Once the valve is off fill the bottle with water.

Mark out the bottle where you want to cut and do it with the grinder again - you can leave the water in until it leaks out by itself apparently.

For decent airflow you need at least 3 feet of chimney and ventilation holes at the bottom.

He says you are welcome to come over for a lesson any time, he always has bottles ready to be converted!

Got any pictures of one of his big, rocket-style ones?

Whatever he can find usually. The whole point of them is that although they take some time they don't cost much to make.

Aircon ducting is good, but pretty much any steel pipe that is the right diameter wil do the trick. Aluminium melts!

He is always rummaging in skips and round the back of industrial units to see what he can find.

No pics of the big ones on this pc, might be some on my backup drive but it's at work, I'll have a look tomorrow.
