I would suggest servicing your calipers whenever you change the pads, chances are quite high that they have never been done. You should be able to reuse the seals you'll just need some cleaner and some grease for the sliders.

all i have done is pushed the pistons back in the removed the pads, i then sprayed some brake cleaner on it and scrubbed it with a toothbrush.

Is that enough ? my mechanical knoledge is quite low

That's pretty much the standard pad changing method. It doesn't always go to plan though, as i'm currently finding (my pistons just won't retract much!)

Aren't you supposed to replace certain seals etc when servicing the calipers? (it's a separate job to changing the pads, although you can of course combine the two for convenience).

Here's an in depth full caliper service from the ex500 website i frequent.
I'm may seem alot but its actually really easy and straightforward. And will probably save alot of hassle in the future.

All they'll do is check the pads and see if there is and sponginess in the lever. Its up to you whether you do it or not, i did it on my ex500 and they really needed doing, they were full of crap, seals were squashed and some missing all together and the pistons were chipped.

No it's not, unless you either plan to keep the bike, or the brake's are quite working as well as you expect. Obviously it will improve them though, if you can be bothered.
