Hello All,
Bikes are off road due to winter, work and being a woss when it comes to cold. Rather than rotate the batteries on the optimate, (lot of messing around as garage is in block and Mrs Stalk would soon get the strop on with 4 various batteries on the window sill).

Is there any reason why I cannot secure these batteries in a secure location in my van (2.8 td iveco daily) and connect the batteries in parellel to the main battery?

I assume that this would keep them nicely topped up, but would they try to contribute to the start up load and fry the cables? Would I be better off connecting them via the fag lighter which I think is disconected during start up?

Bike batteries are: BMW R80 (large) CBR 600 (Medium) 600 Diversion (Medium) Honda sh50 ped (Small)

Any comments welcome.
Cheers,
Stalk.

It would work but I'm not sure it's worth the hassle.
They'd all need to be properly secured as well as connected together.

All i have ever did with mine is take them indoors and keep them in a warm corner and in a few month time give a wee boost before sticking back in the bike. Your batteries will be close to freezing sitting in the van at night which i doubt will do them any good.

Coupling batteries of different ages and capacities, tends not to be a great idea, and for what your trying to achieve, keep the batteries 'conditioned' wiring them in parallel to a van battery is likely to do far more harm than good.
Big diesel engine, when you come to start it, the more 'reactive' bike batteries will be the first to be sucked of charge, deeply, and quickly, then once the engines running, the alternator will be trying to wallop truck loads of amps into them, almost as fast!

Four optimates and an extension lead.... maybe all in a staka-box out the missus line of sight.... alternatively, Maplin do a 'split-charge' relay for a tenner, and three of them strung off the optimate would keep them all conditioned nicely.... but TBH for the cost, probably be as cheap to just forget it, possibly remove batteries and put in a plastic staka box, hidden some-where reasonably warm where the missus wont moan (or find them.... no they ALWAYS find them!) and if needs be, buy another battery or two come spring!
