I've been bored of "proper" bikes for a bit now. I've been lusting after little step-through bikes and mopeds recently; they are great fun, the essence of motorcycling with none of the crap.

One of the Northern members said he was selling a rare old Honda step-through. It looked fantastic fun and I decided I wanted it.

So, I went to gmanxiii's house last night, and in exchange for a hundred quid came away with this:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/xen0morph/photo1.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/xen0morph/photo2.jpg

So, it's a 1981 Honda NC50 Express Deluxe. 50cc two-stroke, automatic gearbox and drum brakes. Good for 25mph with a normal-sized rider on board. It came with a logbook (last taxed in 1988, apparently) and a key, and apparently it's called "Bert". Laughing

First impressions are that it is absolutely TINY. It fit in the back of my car with plenty of room to spare; it's about the size of a BMX bike and doesn't weigh much either. Should be good for taking on holiday.

Current plans are to fix the petrol tank (which is full of rust) and get it running, then to strip it right down and have the frame powdercoated. Thinking of doing a full restoration on it; it really is a grand little thing and should be a good laugh when it's done.

I'll update this thread when I've done something with it.

i had one of those when i was a wee lad,
decoke the exhaust, and plane the head to increase compression,
and a wee bit of porting work and you'll see 40mph no worries,
great little bikes,
you can do all the usual roller changes etc as well

There were a gaggle (or whatever the collective noun for bikes is Confused FWIW what is the collective noun for bikes?) at Barton Bike Night.

I'm presuming it is 2-stroke with pre-mix as I couldn't see seperate oil tank/pump on these simple things.

Looks like fun.

Unfortunately not Very Happy

Though you do seem to be able to get a 75cc kit for it. I might look into it.

Connected the battery up tonight, the electrics work, sort of. Seem to be a few dodgy connections.

You wanna put a pit bike engine in it or something that would be kinda awesome Thumbs Up
Mind you just looked at the pics again could be a tad bit of hastle.
When you say automatic gear box, does it have more than one gear and change itself because a couple of years back i had a tomos tx 50 that had two gears and it changed itself, weird sensation on a bike but still pretty nifty.
Thumbs Up

I had one of those many years ago......i think you have to wind it up by kicking the kickstart lever then you just press a start button to get it running......it was shite to be honest Laughing

woody> It's a kickstart model. Apparently the later ones did come with a kickstart.

Did a few jobs on it tonight. Got the tank off and left it to soak in this stuff:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/xen0morph/100_3246.jpg

I've cleaned it tonight and just put the rust remover in to soak, I'll drain that tommorrow evening and POR15 it.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/xen0morph/100_3248.jpg

In the meantime, I've started stripping it down to the frame:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/xen0morph/100_3244.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/xen0morph/100_3247.jpg

For its age it is in suprisingly good shape. Haven't encountered any seized bolts yet and everything just comes apart so easily - you can sort of tell where its roots lie as it seems to be designed to be repaired.

Amazingly the exhaust doesn't have any holes in it - it's pretty rusty but seems fairly solid. Might put some of that Metal Ready stuff on it (will probably have a bit left over from the tank) and see how well it comes up.

Very Happy

A pile of bits:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/xen0morph/100_3267-Copy.jpg

An engine:

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/xen0morph/100_3263.jpg

Fuel tank is still being soaked in rust remover, starting to look pretty shiny inside Very Happy

One thing I did notice is that this thing is cracked. It seems to belong to the auto choke mechanism. Reckon it can be araldited back together?

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/xen0morph/100_3265-CopyCustom.jpg

Anyway, looks as though most of the blue bits are gonna need respraying (need to find a match for that paint colour) - first thing I'm going to do is recondition the forks I think and then do the frame, to get the bike rolling again.

OK, I am in two minds as to which way to go with this.

I could either restore it to mint condition (future classic?), or I could dump the legshields and any extra weight and set it up for performance (more fun).

What are your thoughts? It's in pretty nice condition and is mostly all there but I think if I spend too much time trying to make it perfect, I'll get bored...

Performance all the way.

Id like to double the output of the engine if i can ( recall it has some 3hp standard?).

The barrel castings are terrible so i smoothed them out, now the carb is the problem as the main jet isnt big enough. Not normaly a problem, but they dont seem to do replacement jets for it!

Id like to bin the auto choke, cos its awful and i hate it. Carb change should sort the jet and choke problems. The exhuast is also restricted, as is the exhaust port on the barrel.

The 2 speed box uses ATF fluid for lube. You can change when it shifts gears in the revs by adding or taking away a few ml/cc's of oil.

I made a big mistake finding that website! Laughing
