I cannot understand the desire to travel great distances in one go. I know that sometimes its good to get somewhere fast, ie away from the channel ports, but once on my way I find that 300 miles a day max is more than enough.
I prefer to travel on interesting roads and mountain passes than spend a weeks holiday on motorways and A roads flying past everything.
Yes I have done 650 miles in a day getting somewhere but prefer spending all day travelling 200 miles and seeing the country.

I'll agree with that. To me touring is exploring using interesting roads away from busy motorways and carriageways. Stick to the winding roads and enjoy the views.

Travelling is the eating up of miles and miles to get somewhere you can go touring. Motorways are great for eating up the miles but they are so boring!

Different strokes for different folks.

You get the oh look at the scenery types and you get the tear up the tarmac in Europe types.

We are off to Poland on Friday and we are aiming to do between 150 - 300 miles a day. We will be stopping for a couple of days in several places so we will probably mile munch to reach destination then on the 'rest' day ride around the area to see the sights and enjoy the roads etc. Some days of travelling will only be about 200 miles of riding, but we will take many hours to do it as we will factor in places of interest and interesting roads.

I got back on Friday from a travelling/touring holiday. Steamed down to south France, then took my time coming back up. Then lost 3 days o the trip when one of the tents got flooded.

Got back on Sunday from our trip. We mostly used highways to reach each destination as the aim of our trip was sightseeing rather than the scenery en route.

I plan to do Finland to UK again next year, expect to take 3 days (2600 km), which is taking it easy, last time I did it in two. I was younger and even more foolish then, though.

I enjoy stopping off seeing sites and what not, but then 150-300 miles to me is barely a rideout. Sure if its windy mountain passes then thats one thing, but i often get the urge to ride vast distances, its something i have to get out my system from time to time, 800+ miles in a day, then i feel like i have done something.

Its funny that us "tarmac tearers" are seen to be missing out on experiences because of the high miles per day. I just prefer to cast my net out a bit further. If i wanted to do a few hundred miles a day i would do something similar to stinkwheels UK tour, but if i have a week off i might want to make it as far as possible rather than stopping at every single point of interest.

My thinking is if i want to see sights and do the tourist thing just fly out minus all the hot bike gear. Touring for me is about the riding, and the finding of excellent roads to ride.

I tend to use back roads and mountain passes. I need to plan to use faster roads when trying to get to places though. I can go 600 miles no problem but end up struggling with 2-300 due to my choice of roads.
Next trip in the spring I aim to travel fast and long initially to get away from the ports.

I think the difference is about whether its about the destination or the journey.

I cant remember who, but some people off here, did a thing where they road down to the south of france, but then based themselves there for a week or so, and did rides exploring the area rather than going from place to place.

That appeals to me, as I prefer nice roads and aimless pottering to motorways.

To me that counts as travelling, touring is when your holiday is moving from place to place. You can spend a couple of days somewhere , but riding flat out to be based in one place for a week or two then riding flat out home again is not a touring holiday.

I travel around 4-5000 miles a year on the bike travelling to bike rallys and visiting friends and family in the UK and Europe. I have only spent around 3K miles actually touring on a couple of trips this year... I have ridden about 20K miles so far in total including commuting.

The 3k spent touring was the most enjoyable Very Happy

I travel to my desired regions, then tour them.

Otherwise on a 16 day tour I'd never get passed Germany
