Hose down

So at the moment it seems a good idea to hose the bike down after riding it to get all the crap off. Ideally I'd like to do it straight away and then put the bike back the garage BUT I'm guessing that cold water on a hot bike is a bad idea?

Roughly how long should I wait before hosing the bike down?

What with the roads being filthy and salty (good name for a band) i'm rinsing mine off straight away just to get the worst off.

You've got the bonus of a garage, so any wet probably won't freeze. Otherwise it's a quick wipe with a few rags...maybe a squirt of ACF or WD depending how desperate i am to get back indoors.

The weather's too crappy for a proper clean and if you do it's soul destroying. You return after a 10mile ride and it looks like a Paris-Dakar casualty.

BTW. Noticed that the old 250 i have is standing up to the winter better this year. ACF on a rag FTW.

i was always told to use cold water in the winter as it doesn't dissolve the salt as much as warm water.

I start at the wheels and leave the exhaust and engine until end, but I can't see how it would be much worse than riding through a puddle.

I always used to hose off the bike in winter, straight after getting off it. Hosed the exhaust straight away and never had any problems. Does create a big plume of steam though

Id be attempted to at least not do the engine and exhaust. especially an aircooled engine,
metal which is at a couple hundred degrees C being very suddenly cooled with cold water is a bad idea. Metal's properties change drastically depending on how they are cooled down as im sure you know, even though thats at even higher temps, it still causes me concern at the sort of temps the engine is at after a ride.

By all means, wipe down the panels/fairing, mudguards etc. down with a wet sponge or something but avoid drenching the engine and exhaust with cold water!
leave that til a weekend if you're not taking the bike out, wont hurt it!

Anyone else have a hose at work?

I do and a covered, lit bike shed!

The hose is near the bike shed so I don't have to move my bike.

Also the bike parking is 20 yards from the office door, whereas the car drivers have to walk to the car park, which is up a ramp.

I hose it down at lunchtimes and spray with the Scotoiler preventative stuff.

my CG has not been washed in 7 years it is often offroad its coverd in crap has a nice spatering of rust but has never siezed the brakes or anything like that regular use will stop that happending im not saying dont look after your bike ie keep everything lubed and adjusted im saying it dont matter if its coverd in shite!

I still believe grit is the best option. Sure it wont dissolve the snow (and vehicle), but it will dig into the ice and provide grip, will not dissapere and won't dissolve anything. Besides, salt freezes itself when below 20 degrees, and the last 2 weeks in the night have been at least below that. Not so much now though.
