She's got a 5 mile commute to work every day, is fed up with buses, and is getting a bit worn out walking it. I'm currently trying to convince her to get a moped, or something similar, so, with all your collective knowledge, what would be a good one for her?
She's 50+, used to ride a chicken chaser about 30 years ago, and it'll have to be cheap.
Also, as she's had her provisional so long, will she be entitled to ride upto 50cc without a cbt, or have I just made that up in my mind?

If she's fit and healthy why not a pushbike?

She's not that fit and healthy. She's just given up smoking, after 27 years (that I know of!).
Also, there's some pretty nasty hills that she would have to climb. It'd kill her the first few hundred times! She's talked about an electric bike, but petrol powered is much easier!

Not sure about the licence question although if she only has a provisional I think she would need to do a CBT however long shes held it.
I think if you passed your car test before a certain date you then have a full 50cc/moped licence but I may be wrong.

As for scooters if she can,100cc-125cc lets you keep up with the flow of traffic a lot better something like a Honda SCV100 would be perfect they only do about 50mph but are just quick enough not to let you get overtaken in urban area like on a 50cc.
If she does go for a 50cc scooter then something like a Piaggio Zip would be good they are very light and easy to manage, stay away from anything sporty like speedfights, NRG's ect as they will have probably had a harder life and your paying for a load of pointless sporty bits that you just don't need on a moped.

My mate had an electric bike. Biggest load of useless junk I've ever been privalidged to ride. A moped is a much better bet.

Given the lenght of time that she has not been on 2 wheels, even though she may not need to do the cbt... Doing it would be a good idea, just to see if she can/want's to ride a bike again. Thumbs Up

Get her to take a CBT.
Then buy a Yamaha VITY.
Cheap, 2 years warranty, years free breakdown.
CHEAP services.
65mph easy.
Discreet, and nobody wants to steal one.

Agreed with Ciar?n, get her to do a CBT so they teach her some basic bike/scooter control before she heads off to work on one, after 30 years her skills from the chicken chaser (Question) might well need a bit of a polish, and she will be able to get a 125 and keep up with traffic.

Insurance should be cheap enough, im 29 and can insure my CG for a year for £85 TPO.

Err.... WHY, just becouse the question is "What bike f'mi'mum?"
Does every-one imedietly presume to resort to sterio-type, and suggest mopeds and scooters?

IF she's going to get back on two-wheels, for all WE know, she might have the notion that she's not going to be stuck in the gutter on a chicken chaser again, and rather likes the idea of a Harley, or a Guzzi, or something.......

I mean, if she's smoked for 27 years, at a guess she's old enough to do DAS..... ANYTHING is possible!

Yes, Scooters and lightweights make a lot of logical sense, cheap, practical, easy starting point, BUT, surely the woman has her own mind, and with a little encouragement and enlightenment, who knows, she might rather like the idea of a Fire-Blade or something!

Starting point, I think needs to be to back up a bit, and look at a wider picture and see what enthuses her...

Explain CBT, and the 125 Learner-Law, explain DAS, then take her to a dealers, and show her all the different kinds of bikes, and see what floats her boat, if anything.

Sign her up for a CBT course, with bike hire, and let her try a geared 125, as a taster. They'll swap her to a twist and go if she cant hacxk it or simply hates it, then take it from there.

She may decide to stick to a light-weight, but not necserily a scooter, she may fancy a sports stroker, or cruiser, or even a dirt bike, but its the starting point.... and take it from there.

Sometimes too much help, can be as bad as none. Encourage, support, inform, assist... dont do it all for them, then wonder why all your help isn't apreciated.

Get her a car, seriously I wouldn't want my mum on a bike.

Saying that my mates mum has a 125 scooter, but for some strange reason she keeps on doing a cbt every 2 years instead of taking the test. That I can't understand.

Exactly my point HE is trying to get her a moped... Why?
What would SHE actually like?
End of the day its her thats going to have to ride the thing, steering her down a narrow avenue based on our pre-conceptions of what's suitable or apropriate could be completely the wrong thing to do, and she could absolutely hate it.
We give all the teen-age numpties the sensible advice about getting sensible commuter-bikes and saving thier pennies for thier tests and a big-bike, then they go out and get Mito's or NSR's and the like, that are horendousely un-sensible, why should they have all the 'fun' (of worn bores, ignition faults, bald tyres, etc etc etc... Wink) Why cant a middle aged woman find a bit of fun in it too?
Show her some mags and take her to the dealers! Let her imagination run riot, get her enthused about propper exiting bikes!
THEN bring her back to reality, and CBT and learner-tiddlers.... but with some enthusiasm for ALL of whats possible, and some idea of where it could take her!

I think C90 with a wind shield and handlebar muffs is a good choice for 5 mile commute. Bus on snowy day.

Why not?
She probably has no interest anyway, but if she did, why deny her?
surely its a bit hypacritical to say 'its OK for me, but not for so-and-so'?
More people on bikes, the better as far as I'm concerned.
Whatever age (over that of concent!) or gender.
Less cars on the road, and more road-users with some idea of what its like with a view from a saddle, and some better 'empathy' for the persuit in general.

True.....
But.....
How many of us, would jump up and down and complain if we were told it was 'rediculouse' for us to use a ZX6 or whatever to pop to the shops on?
For cheap, non enthusiast transport, anything would do, if its cheap, enough, but why not try and stimulate a little enthusiasm from the begining?
Biking is SO much more than just getting to and from, isn't it?
So if she's going to get back on two wheels, why NOT let her imagination run riot a little, and give her the oportunity to get that much more from it, on top of cheap personal travel?
She may not WANT anything more than a moped or scooter, but, even then, the Vespa is just as much an automotive icon as a Harley, and a few quid extra getting a 'propper' Vespa over a C90 or Yamaha whatever, IF it gives her that little 'buzz' of it being more than just a way to work, and opening doors to I dont know what by way of the Local Mod-Club, or Scooter Rallies or other 'life-style' activity, could be an awful lot of fun for her.
Basically, yes, cheap-travel was the question, but backing up, she's also essentially a 'newbie', and anyting is possible... just becouse all she might NEED right now is cheap-wheels, doesn't mean that thats ALL that has to be considered!

Yes they are... My dad is allowed to ride 50cc I think.. not sure if its 125.. might just be 50, without needing a CBT. Apparently licences back then were diff, pass before 2001 or some crap?

Quick google...

CBT Exemptions

If your full moped licence was issued from 1 Dec 1990 onwards, then you can ride a light motorcycle as a learner without having to do your CBT again (you must be at least 17 to ride a light motorcycle).

If your full car driving licence was issued before 1 Feb 2001, then your licence has a full category P entitlement (a full moped licence), meaning that you can ride a moped on the road without having to the CBT first.

Of course Thumbs Up If you feel comfy doing so... then do it, but if you have been driving for a fair few years, you may feel safe enough Wink I was driving before my first bike, getting on a bike on the CBT i felt fine on the roads as i'd driven them 100's of times. Just the whole no gear stick Laughing

The lying thieving DVLA bastards. I had this exact arguement with them back in 1997 when they wrote and told me I HAD to do the CBT by law...despite having my full car licence from 1987!!!!
