You're right. Over here they just throw a length of lights over the trees in any old manner, basically looks a right mess. You can see the precision they take over there, delicately placed on the end of each branch, etc...

In general, I think Les Nips are a much more thoughtful bunch of peeps than we are.

We have quite a large enclave on my patch - never hear a peep from them, they don't cause trouble, they don't drink and drive, they don't even get burgled because they've all got Death Star-like alarm systems.

They're all very polite, the mums are usually quite tasty and the kids are always well behaved.

One of my best shifts in the Job was playing football in the garden with a couple of Japanese kids because their mum was having a breakdown (culture shock - just like you read about in the papers. we're too rude for them!) and we were trying to distract them. I'm pretty sure they let me win out of politeness...or pity!

Whilst I agree the 'precision' is beautiful, sometimes it does get a bit depressing. I'm not sure about the Japs, but certainly with the thais almost 50% of their school time is spent making things look pretty or dancing etc.
The amount of time they will willingly spend to make complete stupidity is staggering.
Same with the christmas lights, yes it's slightly more pretty... but a big difference? But the time difference, the man power... the craziness...

These made me very ambivalent... Utterly stunning (the camera missed a lot of detail), but they took one person (each) about 7 hours working through the night to be ready (and fresh) for the morning.

https://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs612.snc4/59224_10150267887885545_538730544_14604927_28807_n.jpg

Luckily, Christmas over here was damn near non-existent.

I wanna go to Japan... Sad

(not for christmas lights Laughing)

Not only are they nicely arranged (which is probably way beyond the ken of the average knuckle-dragging council workman over here), but they also haven't been knocked over, urinated/vomited upon, or just generally vandalised - which is what would probably happen within the first weekend of those lights going up over here.

I've been reading Noriko's blog fairly regularly since you first posted the link on here, and whilst her English is a metric fuckton better than my Japanese the picture caption "Peter rubbits in a woods" made me crease up. Images of paedobear sprang to mind rather than Ms.Potter's beloved creation.

This may just be a sign that I'm on BCF too much Thinking

Her name is really Noriko? There was a strange TV show here called that with a 'Japanese' interviewer talking bad English to Finnish celebrities, my kids used to love it.

Just curious, I don't know many (any) Japanese, so the name only reminds me of the series.

I had a very bad experience as a result of a girl called Noriko. She was a student in Tokyo who became infatuated with me, and one evening took it upon herself to escort me to my home station. You couldn't make the next bit up...as I gave her a kiss, to see her on her way/get rid of her, a train pulled into the station, the doors opened and there was my GF Fumiko, stood right in the doorway watching the kiss.

I got slapped all over the seat I was on, punched a drunken Yakuza onto his ass and got arrested and released a couple of hours later after the cops at the station deduced my GF was a psycho bitch from hell. I was then battered all the way home by the GF with my helmet.

I met the current Noriko some years later, but the name was still highly prejudicial. Laughing

I missed that one, but I have been smiling gently at her little Japanese-isms, which are very cute.
