PostPosted: 10:36 - 07 Aug 2008    Post subject: Project: Suzuki GP125 Reply with quote

Yeah posted a few topics around the forum with my bike in,
But it's a 1984 Suzuki GP125 2 Stork Engine
Currently trying to get it running (If anyone has idea's they're all welcome, the title of that topic is Suzuki gp125 running problems)
But I intend to get it up and running, hopefully for less than £750 (so far spend in the area of £500 trying to fix it, but if it gets to £750 and isn't working then I'm selling it on or scrapping it. If it's running then I'll do a full restore on it over the months to follow Smile
But yeah, here it is in it's current state
https://a712.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/95/l_a809f39db2784ec7dfc72cba6f4ee13f.jpg
https://a762.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/92/l_d2a93de1adbf4ccbac81155a166c44a9.jpg
Took ages to get the rust off one side of the fork, cleaned both up now, just haven't had nice weather to picture it
https://a9.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/11/l_b0cc8f0b7ceca4e19ae11459909fca48.jpg

If anyone has any idea's of how to get rid of surface rust, and how to buff up the engine casing would you let me know?
But yeah I hope to get that to it's former glory, don't mind the cost so much after I've got it working
but yet us know what you think of it, and I'll post pictures up of how it's been improved as I get it done Smile

use different grades of wet and dry, followed by autosol metal polish or something.

start at about 500 grit paper and work your way up to 800 grit or something. should get a really nice shiny finish once polished up.

After looking at the Engine Cases properly I think there actually made out of plastic and have been painted grey...
But did some work on the rust on the frame:

watch out for rust on those sorts of swingarms.
it may not look bad, but it may well have penitrated and already be eating its way out.

i recently had to weld up a swingarm on my RXS100 for the MOT, as when the tester poked it with a screwdriver, it went straight through.

There's one bit that's going to need fully replacing, my brother will probably be able to make it for me though, but the swing arms atm are still pretty solid, was just surface rust (I think) But that's why I put some rust paint stuff on them, encase it got worse, plus it makes it look a little bit tidier.

Ahh bloody hell its been ages since I said anything in this topic :p

The bike's near enough running now, I've just got to sort out the fuel mixtures on it and it's done Smile

It needed a new gasket in the carb that was all >.<

Added a few more things, mostly internal things (Helicoiled exaugst fittings as they had gone, new Points and Condenser? fitted, but not gonna take pictures of them Razz)

So here's a few new things that you can actually see
https://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/52/l_519a9949ec29438c83be3dd7746154e6.jpg
Wheel looks nasty and the pictures a bit blurry but there's a new Sprocet(sp?) abnd chain on it, looking at price for a new chain gaurd since I can't polish it up Sad

https://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/48/l_37698e48b76744a98cc8c0b406640498.jpg
That's the carb side of the engine all nicely polished up.

Haven't riden it since these changes, my dad picked it up from the garage and the rear lamp lense fell out so it's not road legal atm :p But it's meant to smell/sound/run really well now

(We tested how loud the engine is, can be heard for about 2 miles Razz)

nice, i love rotary valve smokeys Very Happy
(ive got 2)
they dont like to be flooded, so always turn off your fuel tap.
(as the fuel goes directly into the bottom end)
and if you ever park it up for a long period, make sure that its sitting at top dead center,

i expect to see a running video shortly Very Happy

... ¬.¬ I always leave the fuel tap on... I know I shouldn't but it never floods...

It only has a start up problem when I leave the choke on too long.

And yeah I'm gonna see if I can get a video done when the weather sorts out, hopefully I wont stall it >.< :p

Its coming a long nicely though, rest of the damage is mainly cosmetic and rust repaire but still looking at a few hundred to finish it off

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSCF1825Small.jpg

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/86429204_full.jpg

I quiet like that B120... What year is it?
And the Kawasaki looks quiet a lot like the GP 125 in some ways Laughing

Aye, they will be coming, I've got a new rear lamp coming tomorrow so I'll fit that on and hopefully get it on the road for a few pictures and a video of it actually running over the weekend Smile

I'll keep you posted ^_^

the b120 was first registered in 1982 in nz but they stopped making them in 1978 in japan, so i dare say it was sitting in a warehouse in japan for a few years untill they could find some one to take them off there hands, quite a few made it in to new zealand, but they were mostly a japanese domestic market bike. pretty damn slow to be honest, but perfect for wellington (nz capital city)

yeah thye gp is quite similar to the kh,
both kawasaki and suzuki both started to make rotary valve bikes after bridgestone won a few race events, and then they basically forced bridgestone out of the maket refusing to buy there tyres if they kept producing bikes, and then stole the design, and started making them themselves Very Happy cheeky buggers aye.

Hey, i'v had a quick browse of this topic and thought that this might be of interest to some of you.

I have recently got a Suzuki GP 125 '1983' and its in perfect working order. When i got it it had just over 9000 miles on the clock and only a few dents and tiny patches of rust.

Here are a few pictures and a video Thumbs Up
enjoy.

It came with the original tool kit too.

Do it!
You'll be amazed at how many parts you can get for them, only thing I'm actually struggling to replace is a side panel, the rest of the parts I've found at a suzuki dealer or on the Internet. And I've replaced gaskets, clutch, break bar, lap shade, all sorts, all thats left is the pipe and rear wheel holding bit then it's paint job time.. Oh and the wheels but they still work :p

I bought a GP125 a few days ago. From a mechanic who is retiring, selling his house and moving to the countryside. Looks pretty decent so far, especially for the 500 dollars I paid for it Mr. Green

Its starting in ~ 3 kicks from cold and maybe needs a bulb changed in an indicator. The horn is rather feeble (I can hardly hear it, the engine roars far far more loudly) I'll have to open it and find out, not a problem since the guy basically handed over all the spare parts he had left after selling all his bikes!
Only concern is that it belches smoke for ~ half a minute to a minute after starting. He said its always done so but I mean to get it a roadworthy certificate and get it registered for on-road use... I'm not sure if it would pass that test for pollution control Sad The engine sounds rather nice though. only has ~ 26,000 Kms on it.

I'm a little wary of taking it in for the roadworthy test if they are going to pick on things. I want to fix it up first.
Any advice on what Exactly to check before trying to get it registered would be welcome. I'll post up some pics and m'be a video of the sound and smoke when I go back to mum's house (where its parked ATM).

thats the nature of 2 stroke bikes they all do it,
take the bike to them warm, if you are worried about it, but they won't fail you on a bike that only has to meet 80's emmission standards, not todays standards

right so, after a winter of trying to keep this thing running I failed.

And finally the part I need is D/C Crying or Very sad

Anyone have any idea's as to how I can get around a Master Cylinder that basically got held together by the fluid in it? (Once I changed the pads and the break fluid the seals dissolved and I can't access them to replace them, so now need a new part.

Is there an alternative I could use? I know the GSX400 T 96, GS250 T/X 96 and GS450 82+99 bikes all used them, but this isn't really helping my luck in finding a replacement at present Sad

Will be grateful for any advice you brilliant people can give ^_^
