Anyone have experience with selling a crash damaged bike to breakers?
The CG is knackered enough for me to not want to attempt fixing it (not enough time nowadays between uni work and trying to save money for graduation)

Would you recommend sticking it on ebay/gumtree and waiting for offers (I'm thinking about 200-300 quid?) vs getting a commercial operation to come and give me a proper CoD etc? Still has MoT/tax for half a year.

If it helps anyone who might be able to estimate me price:
2002 CG125, low speed off

Speedo bent so the needle can't move past 10mph
Front headlight smashed
One footpeg bent/rubber off
Front brake lever bent (still works 100%, just awkward alignment)
Handlebars a little out of alignment (suspect they just need loosening + straightening up)
Engine not making lovely sounds though it still runs/rides

Cheers

I'd ebay it.
At least it is pretty much a gauraunteed to get rid, you'll get a fair price although fair might not be what you are looking for.

Breaker will offer you about £50 for it i imagine

Stick it in the for sale section of BCF to see if there are any takers

I've got good use out of it and just want rid - just don't want to stick it on eBay and have some cowboy turn up haggling on the price (not to mention the legals, should I put in writing it's not road worthy etc?)

Just say it as it is, what it is, mileage, loads of pics, what you know needs doing amy tax or mot.
Also state collection must be within a certain time, price bid is the price to be paid , since some people are such retards they seem to think the bid price is a starting point for a haggle.

Never had a lot of trouble with this apart from one person buying a truck from me and in the listing it stated 'needs front offside tyre' and bloke tried to haggle saying "it don't just need replacing it's bald" Rolling Eyes

+1. Your legal responsibility as a private seller is pretty much as follows:
Don't lie.

That said, putting up all the relevant facts can't do any harm (and will prevent it potentially backfiring and bringing you hassle), along with the few extra specifics above because eBay is indeed a retard magnet.

Obviously the best way (and probably cheapest eBay option knowing how eBay tend to charge fees) to get it attention is to stick it up 99p no reserve. The downside to this is pretty apparent though, not least with the additional chance of being messed about by someone who has agreed to pay a certain price. It'd probably be 'safer' to do a buy it now, with a make an offer option.

If you are going to sell via eBay there are options to exclude those with no/negative feedback etc etc. I suggest you make use of these to minimise the possiblity of having a time-waster latch onto it.

Personally if in doubt i'd stick it up on the free advertising sites as a classified ad, with the price you expect (maybe jacked up a little so you have haggle room). Maybe eBay later, if it's not selling, depending on how quickly you want/need to shift it.

If there were a way for me to get the bike back I'd happily have it off of you.

There's no shortage of people (me included) wanting a project bike. A smashed CG is a great starting point. Ebay the sonofabitch.

Why not break it yourself and sell the bits on ebay seperately? You might make more that way.

As stated earlier I don't really have the time anymore. Uni studies have been a lot harder on my free time than I expected. It's also difficult for me to ship parts out and I'm kind of far out (Hull) for someone to come up and collect a set of handlebars.

I might stick it out until Summer and see how busy I am then.

Fix the bike mate. It would cost you 60 pounds and an hour of labor.
Then you can sell it for 800 quid if you want.

I don't have the bike here so let me try and think of what else is fucked with it. It's gonna be more than an hour's labor for me, someone more experienced might be able to knock it together.

Rear left indicator snapped off (still working though, could sort that)
Front forks pitted

I could probably get the bits together, I just don't have the drive to sort it all out now. Think I'll wait it out and in the summer I'll have a good look and see if I can find the parts on a budget.

If you have the time and disposition then breaking it yourself would probably earn you more.

That said, sometimes i cant be fucked with keeping a bike on the road and use it as an excuse for and upgrade..

As I said earlier I'm not really sure how I'd shift the parts once I did so. I'm a bit out in the middle of nowhere for people to collect.

The bike was never getting me through Mod 2 anyway so I might wait until next year and do DAS. Get myself a nice 600 commuter.

A CG should get you through Mod 2 like a hot knife through butter, where is it letting you down?

lol tbh doesn't even sound in that bad of condition

+1.

My CG was in a hell of a lot worse condition than that after I made it fight with the road a few times... Can get round headlights for £10, A hammer for the peg, new brake lever is £3, adjusting the wheel alignment takes 2 minutes, indicator, simple - it's held on by 1 screw, sorting out the speedo needle is also simple, takes about 15 minutes.
And with the engine 'not making lovely noises', i'm betting if you were to change the oil and sort out the valve clearances, it'd run much better.

There's really not that much wrong with the bike, and fixing it will earn you £500 more than what you're looking for (at least).

The 2002 has electric Start IIRC, so that'd do for some youn'un looking to do their test.

I definately think you should fix it yourself. it'll take you a day tops once you have all the parts.

And you're saying you want a 600 commuter... Well what happens when it needs serviced and needs parts replaced? better learning now on a bike like a CG which is simple to work on, and applying these skills to a bigger bike, which will save you a lot of money over taking it to a dealer for a service.

Just my Penny Coin Penny Coin , would hate to see another perfectly good CG taken to bits and sold...

If someone offered you £50 an hour you would probaly take them up on it, so just an hour of browsing ebay, and a haynes manual plus a few hours labour it should be fine. Thumbs Up

The main problem is the engine and forks, I'm not bothered about all the other stuff (it's cosmetic really).

It's not valve clearances or oil, I had a look at that before. I had a mechanic fix the exhaust which was blowing (costing the earth, someone stripped the cylinder head bolts) and that didn't help either. I've lost the thread from before but basically I was riding as normal and some awful mechanical noises came from the engine, as if something was perhaps grinding up a bit.

That's the main problem, with the engine being knackered in some way it feels like putting make up on a munter.

I have a haynes manual and rebuilding an engine looks like a proper all day job + whatever I need to replace.

About the speedo, the needle isn't bent, the plastic casing is smashed up so the display is bent meaning the needle can't move. The indicator snapped off and left the screws in, I can probably glue it back on.

On Mod 2 I'm probably gonna be put on a dual carriageway, 50mph is gonna look a bit weird no? As if I'm afraid to maintain proper speed.

Seems like if it was all so easy to sort I'd be able to sell it for more, no?
