Once i've got my tax n van sorted out i'm wanting to buy myself a nitro or petrol rc car. I did have an acme condor kit, but that thing was friggen crap. Had lots of different bits missing and bits that wouldn't fit together. Then I sort of crashed it into a hedge when the batteries died on the controller. It completely knakered the front end and was going to cost a good £40 to get the parts. So it got sold. I'd forgotten all about them to be honest until i saw the thread on here. It's just got me wanting another to keep me amused while i'm not working.
Does anybody know of any kits that don't cost the earth and are actually half decent? If i was silly rich i'd just buy a hpi baja, I really like the look of them baja buggies.

Any of the Tamiya range would be good as a first kit. Nice to build, and plentiful spares available. Easy to buy more performance orientated parts to upgrade it in the future too.

They are £££ based fun things.
The more you pay the more you get (or it will last longer).

I bought a two-bob RC chopper. Shite. It dissapeared over the garden wall on it's 1st outdooring. I never knew it was controlled by IR light. Shocked

For RC fun it's got to be a engine driven chopper. Cool

But not cheap.

I've had rc choppers before. Nothing expensive but enough to teach me that I'm shite at flying them lol. Had a 4ch one cost a few quid, took it just over the height of my house then it must of lost signal with the receiver, it fooked off into a tree. Broke it in a big way Laughing .

Did have quite a lot of fun with my condor before crashing it. I want another rc car, would buy another condor but after the hastle i had building it and the cost of spares i'm not going back there.
I'm on a bit of a budget but i dont want to buy something crap like that condor.

That, or buy a clone version.

Ansmann do some reasonable kits for reasonable money.

that is indeed true, but there are people who prefer 2 stroke bikes to 4 stroke. Different strokes for different folks.

I personally hate nitro. I built a brushless 1/8th buggy in early 2000s before it became mainstream. I turned up at the track, was patted on the head, and 'awwwwweeee'd at, let on and won the a-main final by 2 laps. They then promptly banned electrics in 1/8th. Electric would be so much further on if it wasn't for ROAR.

Think it's the mechanic in me lol. Don't know why exactly, think it's the lack of noise from an electric one. Not overly fussed on the speed, i bought an unknown nitro r/c car off ebay second hand years ago. The seller said in the description he was selling it because it was too slow for racing anymore. So i presume it was raced, it managed to out run my mates ped that was restricted lol. That ended in bending the lot Laughing to be fair it wasn't 100% my fault the batteries died and the servo jammed full on, a fail safe will definitely be purchased.
I like the look of that Ansmann kit, if i got it and decided i wanted to upgrade it is it easy enough to get fancy parts for it?

I have a HPI MT2
a HPI Bullet 3 (new waterproof one)
and a traxxas revo 3.3 with a werks picco .27 big block in it, refused to cough up on a bracket mod so made my own, feking amazing.

buy a second hand nitro and take it apart then put it back together.,

I think the tamiya kit form things are great but over priced and on the whole shelf queens, just look at the avante.

I have an associated SC10. Brushless with Lipos and a 2.6ghz radio.

It wins.

Nitro isn't all that bad. Generally the people who don't like it can't tune them properly. I bought a Rex-x cheapy buggy ages ago and was still using the shitcake Force motor it came with 3 years later with relative success at the track. Truth is when they are tuned right and running sweet they are very quick and enjoyable to use.

Electric is just better. Quieter, faster, more efficient.

I have 'dabbled' in nitro though.

Thought I'd like nitro when I got back in to it this year, but a quick look around the forums convinced me otherwise.

TBH, it's not the tuning/running that looks bad for me; more the having to decommision it properly when putting away for a while... RC is something I pick up and do for a couple of weeks then back in the attic for a year, still covered in mud Wink

The brushless and LIPO setup on my SC10 is so damn good that I can't imagine ever wanting a nitro car. My SC10 is damn quick even with a mid level motor. If I put a top level reedy motor in there, it would be dangerous for want of a better word.

As it is I can drift it at will and do spectacular jumps. I can't imagine a nitro to be more responsive, much faster or easier to set up.

Just asking Wink for someone to say twice that it's shit with no explanation of why, just thought lol.
I've had two, admittedly they didn't last long due to my driving skill Laughing but i had no problems once i'd set the motor up right.

Defblade how d you mean decomission it?

I don't remember 100% - stuff about cleaning up all the exhaust muck, draining the tank and maybe flushing through due to fuel residues??

Anyhow, knowing full well how I'm not very committed and as I say, tend to pull my car out, fix it from last time, run it a few times, break it and just put if away again, dirty, until I fancy playing again (smoked the motor last time out so it's been in its bag for a few months now... I'll get a new one soonish tho Wink )... I could just see that I would run into trouble with nitro.

Still kinda fancy one though Wink Just for the noise Twisted Evil

Just have to clean them up and use redex in the motor before storage. The nitro fuel residue will attack the motor internals if left. Don't want to come back to it and find a £150 motor with no compression aye?

Yeah by decommision, technically all you have to do is run it through with this after-run oil to prevent corrosion as it does badly if left. Obviously it's good practise to clean it off and check seals and suspension units and periodic strip downs and personally I think it's part of the fun but I can see where the "fuck it, stick it in the loft" attitude comes from and if I did it, I would probably soon get like it.

By budget, how much are you talking?

My dad is/was into it and I can give you a bit of basic advice on the nitro front. Never got an electric car cos they are annoying. Part of vehicles for me is the noise, even with rc. They are fun to drive but you can't use them in as many places as they are noisy and people complain though.

Obviously they cost more cos of the oils and fuel whereas electric is just charge and go. In the same way though, you run out of electric and you go home. When you go out with nitro, just take fuck loads of fuel and transmitter batteries Laughing

Be careful with buying second hand as we bought a "good second hand" one and it was completely fucked. Ended up getting half back after opening a case on ebay but it costed more than half to put it right, everything was fucked!

Merry christmas Very Happy

As good as electric now is, it still lacks compared to Nitro. IMO

I went mad with the things a few years ago, had 6 at once, which was too much.

The Hyper8.5 i had was a brilliant bit of kit. Used to do really well on track and throwing it off insane jumps. Never managed to break it. Coupled that with an RB C6 engine ( Some £250 worth) and the thing would wheelie past most things down the straight at the local track.

Do still have a few, a nitro Losi XXX-NT stadium truck that im gonna try and fit the old RB .23 race engine out of my Revo into. Also a 1/18th Brushless/Lipo Car that manages some 76mph on a speed gun, if it can be kept on all 4!
