Doctors etc. strongly advise against putting cotton ear buds in your ears - in fact, they are just called cotton buds these days. In fact, it also says the same on the packet. Now, if you can't stick them in your ears, what else are you supposed to do with them? I can't think of a single thing!

Life fact: Don't pull funny faces whilst cleaning your ears.

I dunno, I've used cotton buds daily for years and years and never had a problem with my ears, either earache or blocked with wax or anything... whereas I know some people that never clean their ears and have had to get them syringed.

But aye, if you're advised not to use them then what are they used for? cleaning your beak? cleaning your ring? I dunno.

Not seen them advertised as cotton ear buds for ages though, just cotton buds.

Pretty sure the original use was for cleaning fluff out from between your toes.

They're bloody useful for sticking in your ears though.

Also for cleaning small objects.

Had to stop using them in my ears as cleaning all the wax out caused infections. Your ears are more than capable of keeping themselves clean. Scab-lifters are quite correct to advise against jabbing them in bodily orrifaces, I can imagine they could do some damage if inserted a little to far....

I've used the tip of a small Phillips screwdriver and a long fine pair of scissors before now. Buds are crap because they bludgeon the wax further in the ear. I've used then for cleaning fine electrical bits and bobs before now tho. With Isopropyl alcohol they're very good at that

I have a box in my garage, dip them in brake fluid for cleaning pistons and niggly bits of calipers.

Good for both make-up and nail polish correction. Plus cleaning things with gaps, like keyboards etc.

Mother (nurse) says you never remove all the wax from your ear and end pushing the remaining wax up to your ear drum and making it all compact and shiz. Or something along those lines, was a couple of years ago since she told me

You don't, they clean themselves. I've never cleaned my ears and don't have wax dripping out of them. Occasionally, when I feel the need, I put my finger and give it a wiggle and sometimes get a bit under my nail. Friends at college where also baffled by not cleaning ears. I think it is weird to clean them!
