Hey.

Currently bikeless but have been riding G's GSXR1000 round for a few months.
Now, that sort of power...I really cant trust myself Laughing So ive decided to go with the noise/torque aspect of the 1000cc, i'd like a change!

Ive looked at the VTR, but it consumes faster than a fatty at a buffet.

Also had a quick peek at the TL1000R and S... Maybe im missing something but dont these have odd engine/gearbox issues?

Found a few SV1000's around the local shops, feels comfy enough!

Any other big twins to look at? Not a huge budget, but I think 3.5-4k should be enough? Insurance on the SV1000 comes up at £290, which is fine.

Ouch, although mine was quite high this year too. The older RSV's are pretty cheap these days there was a good one at work going for 2800, that would leave plenty for insurance Wink

Its the 10 claims Sad But insurance is all over the place for me.. some things like my Supra are pennies to insure compared to a Subaru..

I'd rather buy the bike with what money I have, but yea I could use the rest to aid insurance, just dont want to pay over the odds.

I understand what you're saying! Ive had to pay over the odds (or what I expected at least) for my bike and my car this year. When my hayabusa quote came through in may it was something like 260 FC, I fancied a change so quoted the RSV at 300. Took 2 months to sell mine and get the aprillia and by then the insurance had gone up to £375, similar story on the car and couldnt get below £400 for my xtrail without going for one of the really shit bargain basement companies!

Laughing Your guess is as good as mine!
I insure a Triumph Daytona 600 for £97.50 a year... But cant insure a GSXR600 for under £700

I can insure an SV1000 for about £300, but a GSXR1000 for £1700 Laughing

Impreza would cost £4300 to insure, Supra costs £1500 FC...

All 10 claims are non fault, but i'm not risking not telling them, major ball ache if they find out!

If you're looking at a large capacity twin that isn't a superbike, then the RSV Falco is, IMO, by far the best of the bunch. I've owned a VTR1000 Firestorm and the Falco, and I've ridden (at length) the TL1000S and SV1000. You could also consider any number of Ducatis but the air cooled engine is a long way off the pace of the water cooled offerings of competitors.

The Firestorm/SV and Falco all give about the same top end power, but the Falco has a better engine (more grunt/better spread of power), a much better chassis and has a far higher standard of build and finish than the Suzukis in particular. The forks are standard RSV Mille items and though the standard rear shock is admittedly poor, the RSV standard and Ohlins shocks are a straight swap and completely sort the back end out. I replaced my Falco rear shock with a standard RSV shock off ebay for £50 and then had it set up specifically for my weight and style of riding at KAIS. Hanving done that, it then handled much more like a superbike than any of the other naked/half-faired twins I've owned/ridden (bar the current bike).

Unlike the RSV, first/second gears on the Falco are fairly short which made it a doddle around town (for a twin) but also a but of a wheelie monster.

Would cost around £2.5k all in for a very tidy Falco, and it would be considerably better (more fun/better made/faster/better handling) than a newer SV.

If you want something newer, then definitely worth considering a Tuono too (either the Mille based model or RSVR based model). You may just get an early Tuono 1000R (2006-) within budget, which is an altogether better prospect as a performance bike. It's as well made as any Honda, reliable, bloody good fun and damn fast, and in my experience, is as cheap to insure as any of the other options you're considering.

I will have a hunt round for a falco, from what you have said, it sounds perfect!

Only thing that bugs me, I've never owned anything but a Japanese bike for a long period, not had any problems...switching to a European bike is a bit worrying, I've not really checked maintainence schedules for the Falco yet, but I guess im being paranoid Laughing

What are they like for spare parts and maintainence?

Cheers for the informative replies guys, they really do help.
I'll let you know about Falco quotes.

OEM parts (as with most Aprilias) are expensive, but as the Falco shares the same engine as the RSV Mille, original Tuono and the Futura, lots of bits are interchangable and very widely available as either second hand parts or aftermarket spares. And service items are no more expensive than any equivalent jap bike. It's easy to service yourself but you have to get used to the external oil tank as the motor has a dry sump. But it's not much more complicated to work on than anything else. Spark plugs are a bit of a pain to get to but easily done with a bit of time and the right tools.

From my experience, it was just as reliable as a good Jap bike, and easy enough to work on. None of the bits and pieces I needed were any more expensive than they would have been for a Jap bike either.

The Falco sounds ideal...well the best compromise. Bit like my ST2. Lots of bits are shared amongst the other bikes. I could slot an Ohlins front end with 1098 wheels and a S4R S/side swingarm..(It'd be daft )

Looking at the specs the Falco looks like a fun bike, and 70 ft/lb of torque Mr. Green

Looks the business, and on youtube it sounds it too!!

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aprilia-SL1000-Falco-Red-2004-04-reg-3700km-One-Owner-/110625865674?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item19c1d0bfca#ht_1202wt_1139

That looks fairly tidy... I checked the wiki, dry sump? am I wrong to assume the GSXR is a wet sump bike? whats the difference?

Sorry for the pro noob... Laughing

How did I miss this bike!

This is very true. She drinks like a fish but the V Twins are great fun. I was out today for a while for the first real ride out since I got my VTR a couple of months ago and cruising along at 70 feels like your walking. Even hitting over 100 today I was comfy.

She may need filling up every few hundred yards but I really dont care!
