David Jamieson, Road Safety Minister, said: "You are four times more likely to be involved in an accident when using a mobile phone and driving - and this new offence will help make our roads safer.

"Today's new offence applies to hand-held mobiles - but using any type of phone while driving increases the risk of having an accident. Remember the police can use other powers to prosecute a driver if they are distracted by a call on a hands-free phone."

The Government plans to amend the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 to make the new offence punishable to three penalty points to an offenders' driving license and a £60 fixed penalty. It has yet to timetable parliamentary time to push through this change in the law. ®

It all depends on whether they are male or female, and if female, the length of the skirt Wink

There is some truth about that, but what if its a female copper, surely she wouldn't be that bothered about the lengh of a girls skirt (unless she swings in that direction Razz )

Well they can and they do. Discretion is a great thing - the opposite is "zero-tolerence" which we all hate. Maybe the person I mention was sitting in the car with the engine running, whilst your freind was changing lanes on the M25.

Dunno, but since when have they done 2 points for that? It's meant to be 3 points and £60 but England and Wales police are doing a 2 month grace period and are not giving penalties yet

Hmm, I thought the penalty was 3 points and £30 Confused
As for the 'period of grace', that is optional and only a few forces are adopting it, a few have even said they are going to take a hard line from day 1 (quite rightly).
