I don't know much about crossers myself, as my membership to Sheffield Indoor Motocross hasn't been sent off yet, but If the bike you're buying is a two stroke, I'd be mildly concerned about buying any two stroke that old. However the general consensus on two stroke machines is that as long as they are well maintained, it should be fine.

A CR250 has to be regularly maintained. However as they're designed purely for off road use they don't tend to rack up 1000s of miles quickly.

Just checking that you are buying it for off road use?
I wouldn't expect it to be worth that much for one that old, so hope you won't be paying alot.
Here isn't really the best place for a wealth of off road knowledge, however I'm sure some one more knowledge able than me will soon be along Smile.

You could be asking for trouble cos ive always been into MotoX and the way I see it is the newer the model is the less problems your gonna have with it.
I had a CR500 in mint condition unfortuantly the person who had it before me never used coolent so over the years the water pump caseing rotted through the side of the gearbox.
So it may be a cheap bike but you may end up spending alot of cash on it.
And not many people sell a CR250 for £200 quid if its good bike. No matter what year it is.
Cheers Andy

I don't know for sure, but i would say that with a 19yr old MX bike you will have some trouble tracking down the spare parts that you will need to keep it running. MX bikes are usually updated every season, and its unlikely that any of the engine parts from later CR250's would fit into an 84 motor. I would check with a honda agent/ off road specialist that parts are still available at reasonable prices for that year bike, before buying. If you maintain it though, for a novice there no reason why you cant ride just as fast on an 84CR as on a later model, as its mainly suspension and chassis developemnts that are different on todays MX bikes. if theres a problem with finding spares then id look for an early 90's bike instead, as you should have no trouble getting the bits for them, and they would probably be cheaper. Problem with MX bikes is that if they are raced, but maybe not looked after as well as they should, then they could be knackered in 2 seasons, so an older bike is likely to be either a machine thats been really well maintained for years, or else a complete knacker!

Don't buy cheap crossers. You don't get something good for cheap money. If you want a mess about bike get a DT125 or something, will last a lot longer than a purely dedicated motocross bike. If you're serious about it spend more money, I am talking a grand upwards and get a decent bike. If you don't have that sort of money just save up. You'll only find yourself £200 out of pocket a month down the line otherwise.

Fuck that. Go full out, WR400 or DR-Z400. What do you actually want it for anyway?
