I'm trying to deal with a broadband service instability problem.

The readings from the router are as follows...

DSL Status: Connected
DSL Modulation Mode: ADSL2
DSL Path Mode: Interleaved
Downstream Rate: 6755 kbps
Upstream Rate: 1023 kbps
Downstream Margin: 2 db
Upstream Margin: 8 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 43 db
Upstream Line Attenuation: 11 db
Downstream Transmit Power: 11 db
Upstream Transmit Power: 19 db
Encapsulation: RFC 2364 PPPoA
Multiplexing: VC
Qos: UBR
Pcr Rate: 0
Scr Rate: 0
Autodetect: Disable
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
Enable: Yes
PVC Status: Up


Router is a Linksys WAG200G and is second router used to try and sort the problem.

The service although ADSL2+ bounces between ADSL2+ and ADSL2 and speeds range between 4.2-6.7 according to the router over a 4 day period. Speed test averages 20% lower than listed speed.

Ping rate is typically around 40-50ms.

Exchange is less than 400 feet away not accounting for elevation of around 90 metres so with cable run safe to assume within 1.5 miles so distance shouldn't be a problem.

So why is the connection to the ISP dropping totally, speeds changing so massively and lag often going through the roof? Typically these problems also happen after midnight when it should be quiet.

<edit>Connection to the ISP just dropped (17.57)and re-connected, new readings are as follows...

So a speed drop of almost 1meg amongst other changes.

Some ISP's operate a system where by the speed they let you connect at depends on the stability of your line. constantly reconnecting makes them think your line is unstable and causes them to connect you at a slower speed. The speed you connect at can also be dependant upon the time of day you connect. I had a router reconnecting at 4pm every time and it was always getting shit speeds. I manually reconnected it at 2am and had better speeds as a result.

Speed has now dropped to a shade over 5 meg so a further drop of 0.7meg(23.37).

A soft reboot on the router and speed is now back to 5.7meg...

Your Downstream SNR is fluctuating, it was 2db and is now 6db, this means there is some interference, could be electrical/enivromental REIN or a problem with the copper.

First off to eliminate any internal wiring issues, if you find your master socket in the property, it should have a BT or Openreach stamp/maring on it with 2 screws mid way down the socket just below a split in the plastic. Undo the screws and gently pull the face plate out it shoudl reveal a socket in the bottom right, plug the router in there and monitor for a few days to see if it improves. Also post the router stats when in the test socket.

The reason your margin improved and sync rate lowered is because when the DSL dropped and retrained the port in the exchange will be set with a target margin of 6dB which will cause the sync rate to lower ( can go into more detail if you want :p).

Also dial 17070 if you are on Bt listen to the recorded message then press option 2 for quiet line test and see if you can hear any noise, if you can unplug all kit but one phone and try again if the noise is still here then report it to bt as a noisy line fault, if the noise isnt there try some new/alternative microfilters.
