Trying to bleed up the rear brake system on one of my chops.

GS550 rear wheel, GS550 caliper.

Initially was using a GS550 rear master cylinder and reservoir. Fluid pumps through fine and after the initial bubbles fluid is clear. No pedal feel and no brake
Master cylinder had been sitting dry for a while so I rummaged a spare m/c out which had been stored with fluid in - fitted and the same. Swapped the brake line out for a braided steel one. Same. Even tried a new length of hose from the reservoir to the mc Same

This is where it gets weird. Took the whole system off the bike and set it up on the workbench. Blead up fine.
There is not room for me to fit the system without dismantling so stripped and refitted. Same again. arrrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhh

Both hose from reservoir to mc and from mc to caliper are not kinked

Have left it overnight doing the reverse fluid thing where you leave the reservoir cap off and run a length of hose to bleed nipple with a container of fluid suspended above the fluid reservoir.

If this doesent work I either find a drum brake rear wheel or set fire to the dam thing. Depends how hungover I am tomorrow

When you're bleeding it on the bike, are you bleeding any trapped air from the banjo bolt on the caliper, as well as from the bleed nipple on the caliper?

Depending on where the line sits, you might need to bleed any air from the banjo connection at the M/C end too.

never heard of that and besides its not a good idea to leave your cap off overnight. the fluid will soak up the moisture in the air and it'll reduce its effectiveness.

its possible you've got an airlock between the banjo and mc or in the caliper.

what id suggest is screw your cap back on, do up the nipple, tie your brake lever back as far as you can and leave it over night.

this'll force any air bubbles up to the top. then you can pump it up/bleed normally/top it up and bobs your sisters uncles former roommate

1 big syringe and some clear pipe.
Push fluid backwards through the system. Reverse bleed. Works every time.

This sounds like a good idea.

The problem with rear brakes is that the M/C usually sits level with the caliper, with the hose running along the swingarm, kinking upwards onto the banjo.

Done it, lured my mate round with the promise of (steady now!) a couple of bottle of homebrew. He came round with a spare GS MC - fitted it and the bugger blead straight up

I'd already tried cracking the banjo's on the MC and the caliper but it didnt make any difference with the 2 MC's I had but thanks for the suggestion.

Tried the tie the lever back trick in the past but never seemed to work for me (unless there were other faults in the system)

Pumping fluid in 'backwards' via the bleed nipple with the fluid reservoir cap off allows air in the system to escape without becoming trapped (in theory). Cant see 12 hours or so exposure to air making much difference tbh, if you did use this way and get all the air out it wouldn't take more than 10 minutes to flush the system through with fresh fluid without the ball ache of bleeding

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, the homebrew if flowing at the moment

+1 to this.

It was the only way to get the blue spots on my fazer to draw fluid through. I tried everything and they just wouldn't draw fluid through. Got a syringe and forced fluid up from the caliper end. Bled a treat Very Happy.
