Just seems like it's a little 'detached'. I feel like it's wallowing about a bit over bumps when leaned over, and all the journalist types in the magazines seem to think rear shocks practically explode when they're three years old, so I figure I could do with chatting to someone about a replacement. Any recommendations? Do I need to send it off to get refreshed or shall I buy a replacement? Should someone else ride it to confirm my feelings before I shell out?

Is the shock on your bike adjustable, it was on the older fuel injected CBRs but they fitted non adjustable jobbies on the later models (might just be the forks actually)?

My bike is older than yours and the shock is fine; a few combinations of settings did feel very wallowy, if yours is also adjustable then get it set up properly or at the very least, adjust the preload to match your weight and have a play with some damping combinations.

Yeah, it's adjustable for preload, compression and rebound, and the adjusters all do make a difference, so I know it's actually working.... I'm not a lightweight, so I've fiddled previously, but the standard settings (plus a little bit!) did seem to feel most normal.

Interesting about the linkages, I'll have a proper look at them at the weekend.

Had mine rebuilt by K-Tech, just new oil and seals. Feels alot better, the damping is far more controlled. I found mine used to start to wallow and feel a big vague when pushing on quickly through corners. Can't remember the exact cost, but it was definitely no more than £150.
