Of course it could have been avoided, they left a totally incompetent effective newbie to guard the power station against stuff like this all on his own, I remember watching a documentary.

As for could more have been done? I think they did the best with what they had in 1986. Of course there will be mutations.

A few days after the disaster a guy walked into a nuclear power plant in Sweden (IIRC) where he worked and set off the nuclear material detector as he walked IN to the nuclear plant. His boots had nuclear fallout from the Chernobyl disaster on them.

Fallout from it also affected lamb supply from Wales, people feared for nuclear contamination in the animals and crops they ate.

Fallout from the Chernobyl disaster fell all over the world, crazy stuff.

There are some surviving firefighters who still recall they we told it was just a simple fire, one of them saw 6 of his friends climb a ladder to the roof and he just never saw them again, dead up there.

I have to go there myself, it's quite cheap to visit Chernobyl, spend the day there and generally have a tour/nose about, one of my things to do soon. Thumbs Up.

I'm sure i read somewhere or saw it somewhere on a documentary that some of the wildlife have actually become immune to the radiation. Pretty weird stuff. I don't know if i would fancy a walk around the place how safe can that actually be ?

I'm sure you could nose around in some vehicle and/or radiation suits?!

Its something thats fascinated me for a few years, I've been meaning to go for ages now. Its supposedly quite safe, your shown about with a guide with a geiger counter, everyone keeps telling me I'll be coming back with a tail though Rolling Eyes

There's a few videos of the helicpoter crash on youtube too:

I think most of the radiation is locked up in the soil now so walking around is relatively risk free, but you wouldn't want to stir up dust.
The last two farms subject to radiation testing in the UK were finally given the all-clear as recently as last year.

This is an interesting documentary about the building they built to house the reactor: clicky. I've posted it before in another Chernobyl thread.... got it... clicky

Quite common in places where man doesn't go anymore - for example, the DMZ at the border between North and South Korea has turned into a bit of a haven for wildlife and is home to several species of endangered birds etc.

Edit: As for Nuclear power, James Lovelock (author of the whole Gaia theory thingy) believes nuclear energy is the only choice for powering the future of mankind and avoidance of the prophesied 'hot age' of global heating.

Generally as a result of environmental factors, and other than relevant moral or weak immoral cultural perpetuations of modus operandi, we are all human beings capable of tremendous acts of humanity and self realisation as long as we don't go through life justifying bad deeds to our selves,
allowing materialism thus subjectivism and consumerism to conceal our souls as we strive to avariciously and greedily build up our egos on that which is merely material and not spiritual.

There is a lot of rubbish talked about post Chernobyl.

True, those directly exposed to massive doses of radiation in the plant at the time of the explosion died of radiation sickness.
Other than a spike in thyroid cancers and spinal birth defects in the immediate aftermath from the immediate vicinity, there is little evidence for an incresed rate of birth defects, illness or cancers.

The thyroid tumour spike has also been called into question as these tumours usually take 10 years to develop. It's been suggested the spike was due to increased monitoring. Interestingly, the rates of thyroid cancer per 100,000 in the Ukraine are INVERSELY proportional to the distance from Chernobyl. Those closest have the lowest rates.

A study of wildlife in the immediate vicinity of the reactor by scientists from the natural history museum revealed no evidence of genetic point mutation rates higher than the normal population despite relatively huge levels of radioactivity.

So, very little in the way of robust, quantitative scientific evidence of increased cancer rates or genetic mutations post Chernobyl (and I would imagine they've been looking very hard for it). Lots of anecdote and spin by environmental campaigners.

In fact, there isn't any real good evidence that the levels of radiation that are supposed to be "dangerous" actually are. The levels are set on the basis of data gleaned from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They found a direct linear relationship between the death rate and distance from ground zero. What they did not do though was extend their data set into much longer distances to check the effect of the lower doses. The assumption was made that as the upper part of the graph was linear, so must be the lower part and recommendations were based on that.

Current thinking is that the chart curves off rapidly and drops to zero after a certain point. That point co-inciding with the degree of genetic damage cellular repair mechanisms can cope with before being swamped.

To give an example, how about heat exposure (also a type of radiation)? Stick your hand in boiling water and you'll get scalded. 90 degree water, scalded less, 80 degree, less still and there's probably quite a linear relation between tempearture and damage at that point. But 40 degree water? You're having a sauna.

Also, lots of places have naturally high background radiation - such as various parts of cornwall - certainly higher than most of the world's effects from this I'd have thought.

Thinking actually, they are a bit strange down there as it goes! Razz

no its not. radiation has been around since earth began and it is part of biology. radiation was much higher when life started on earth and thus there was a much greater diversity of life. Radiation will always be about and yes it can cause cancer, but it can also drive forward life. to say one radioactive incident is the cause of cancer displays such incompetence that you should be eradicated from the gene pool. The statement is so stupid and wrong I cant be bothered to explain it to you. Cancer also happens without radiation, sometimes when DNA copies itself it gets one or two of the base codes wrong which may result in a mutation. Cancer would continue to happen even if radiation didn't exist.

Point being?

Yes but its negligible, your more at risk from second hand smoke than you are of the tiny amounts of fallout left in today's world.

you can't turn back time and not invent them. I dont trust other countries to dispose of them and as such I would never get rid of any I owned (if i was head of state). The simple fact is they are here to stay and your never going to get rid of them.
Cancer can be hereditary, but again its a massive over generalisation to assume all cancer is hereditary. the amount of cancer generated by humans nuclear endeavours is so small in the grand scheme of things anyway.
This affects our life in such a tiny way its stupid to think about it. Think about the risk of you developing cancer from Chernobyl , compared to the risk of you dyeing in traffic tomorrow.

As it happens, only last night i was flicking through youporn / tube 8 etc and came across (no pun intended) a video of a girl claiming to be from Chernobyl with THREE boobies....

suspect it's a fake really.

obviously, not safe for work:

Highs, lows and sacrifices of human advancements to name just a few!

Coal miners.....bronchitis and emphysema,
Vibration white finger-sometimes known as dead man's fingers.
57,000 Chinese coal miners suffer from lung disease annually.

Cotton Mills......Eye inflammation, deafness, tuberculosis, cancer of the mouth and of the groin (mule-spinners cancer)

Humans advancing medicines.......E.G-Thalidomide?
In the 50's and 60's pregnant women were prescribed this which led to birth defects.

Humans invent the Atom bomb/Nuclear Bomb, as a result of learning how to destroy the Atom, in effect bringing a tiny sun to the planet under the magnetosphere, now we die from every cancer of most if not all major organs.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They destroy atoms of which we ingest through the digestive system thus the lymphatic system effecting the DNA/stem cells reproductive system of major organs like the brain, liver, blood and skin.
The only reason the sun destroys atoms is because it's gravity is way too heavy.

Why do you really thing the west are putting so much pressure on primitive unprincipled cultures of low morality not to develop the nuclear bomb.
Not just because we don't want nuts to be in possession of them, but because the tests alone kill us all.

At the price of advancement every generation’s cultures have suffered and sacrificed.
Cancer of all the major organs is just another we suffer from today!

Hope this helps!

It would be much better go go back to the Middle Ages when life expectancy was about 30 then?
For all it's failings, technology has generally been the saviour of humanity and will in all probability continue that way.

Do you think, it could have been avoided?

The answer to that is yes. The reactor exploded because people pulled most of the control rods as part of a reactor test. The design of the reactor was such that re-inserting the rods causes a temporary increase in reactor power as they go in.

It should have automatically shutdown as the reaction became too critical but they'd turned off the safety systems to allow them to pull so many control rods for the test. When they tried to put them back in, it was too late, reactor pressure spiked as the rods went back in and the core exploded.

Or that's the gist of what happened, they are still arguing about it. The plant design was not perfect BUT what they did to it was disastrous. Human error essentially and it could have been avoided by having someone who knew what they were doing in charge of the reactor.

In a way they were very lucky that the reactor exploded like it did which dispersed the reactor core to a sub-critical mass. By all rights, it should have gone into meltdown.

i dont mean to sound so lugubrious, but a atom bomb primarily is fission, not fusion.

modern nuclear weapons yes, fusion occurs.

fission is splitting atoms, fusion (the sun) is pushing two smaller ones together.

no where near enough for a sustained reaction inside a modern nuclear bomb.

if no one had nuclear weapons, it would be brilliant, but they don't. the fact that one has means all have. could you imagine how defenceless it would leave the UK if we abolished all our nuclear weapons? the threat of retaliation actually keeps peace between super powers. there is an understanding on all sides that if a nuclear device was fired in war then it would be the end of civilisation. its the only thing stopping america, china, russia taking this world for their own. unfortunately all you need is one nutter dictator to set one off on foreign soil and there will be a proper sh*t storm.

I don't know where to start on that exhibition of disjointed pseudoscientific claptrap.

I started formatting a response then noticed the use of fifteen consecutive exclamation marks which indicates the author is clearly barking so I wont bother.

I'll also add to this. In all modern plants, the rods when withdrawn from the core are suspended above it using magnatism. In the event of a problem they don't need reinserting (where the mechanisms can fail.) Just a failsafe power cut to the electromagnets and gravity does the work.
