PostPosted: 14:30 - 14 Jan 2011    Post subject: Name this bike? Reply with quote

Hi all,

Just a quick one. Would someone give me a bit more information about this bike. All I know is that it is a 1985 KTM 500cc 2 stroke.

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction of a manual for said bike also?

Many thanks,

Damon

Ive been on tj tuning for a few months now. That's where I got my inspiration from. Adam (Shelton62) on that site has done a few different rs125s.

Anyway, I'm picking the ktm up on Sunday and once I get it running the lump is going in my 07 rs125. Should be fun once it's finished Razz

When I wanted a manual for my 87 KTM 350 enduro I asked on ktmtalk (an excellent resource and they have section dedicated to the smokers I believe). However, there's dire warning about what will happen if you try to ask for manuals now - think KTM hassled them on copyright, which is odd because they let you download manuals from the last 10 years for free on their website officially.

So I picked up Steve and in the flesh he's alot better looking than the photos let on Thumbs Up

He looks like he's been dry stored as the amount of rust is nowhere near what I expected from a 25 year old shed of a bike. No furring and only some surface rust. The expansion chamber is in better condition that my 2007 RS
Shocked

Here are a couple of pics before any sort of clean up was started. Didn't realise it was covered in lovely magnesium tarty bits Thumbs Up

Had a bit of a play about and there is plenty of compression + a spark so I whipped off the bing 55 carb for a overhaul. Opened the carb up to find it was in a sorry state. 3 hours later and with the help of carb cleaner, my ultrasonic cleaner and plenty of 1200 grit wet and dry I finally got it resembling a clean carburetor.

Going to check out the cooling system next as it's looking a bit dry. Fingers crossed if its all good It'll be time to drop Steves engine and begin the transplant.

Pics in a sec
