currently running michelin pilot road.
https://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt314/clancy_07/afa5e165229fe705a987287c51a5fe65_refined.jpg

thinking of getting new tyres for the summer, more of a sports tyre. these tyres are good, but due to the design are limiting how far i can lean the bike :/ looking at the tyre, i use it right to the edge of where i can, but i feel like im never leaning into corners far enough. the designs basicly a squared off tyre.

can anyone recomend some advice on new tyres ? more sport type ones, any help appreciated

The important part is to make sure you get some heat into your tyres, before trying to get your knee down Thumbs Up

It sounds to me like you're not hanging off the bike at all. That's why you're running out of lean angle.

Michelin Pilot roads are fine.

yeah i always get heat in my tyres before getting into it.

not to worried about getting my knee down at the minute, i just feel like i cant lean into corners how i want to because of the tyres.
they dont allow for much lean, probably because there touring tyres.

i am hanging off, probably not as far as i could but still.

looking for new tyres anyway as back tyre is getting slightly low on tread, and has had a puncture fixed by previous owner.
cheers

It is not your tyres, it's your head.

Those tyres will grip better than any tyres you could have bought 10 years ago.

I did a trackday once on touring tyres, plenty of lean and KD action.

The best bit of advice I can give on tyres is not to worry about them too much.

Are you running the correct pressures and are your tyres in decent condition?

Yes and no. I'm not saying that you should stick with the Pilot Roads (although by all accounts they are a very capable tyre), but what I am saying is that the tyre which you are using is not the cause of your problem.

Switching to a Metzler Racetec, or a Pilot Power, or a Diablo Corsa or a Maxxis Supermaxx is not going to solve your problem - all the tyres are, IMO, more than capable of giving you plenty of lean angle, grip and speed.

There is something in your head which is causing these thoughts, and the best advice I can give is to ignore tyres and concentrate on the mechanics of your rideing - where you look, your body postion, how you use the throttle etc etc etc.

It is easy to blame tyres - they can be easily changed with the hope that they will reolve the issue, but they won't. Only effort in improving your riding style will see real results. I's recommend reading/watching Kieth Code's Twist of the Wrist books/dvds which are great at explaining how best to ride a bike.

Disclaimer:
If your tyres are really squared off from mileage, they will fell a bit shit - they won't 'roll' into lean very smoothly - the squaring leads to a harsh transition, and changing tyres immediately solves this. New tyres, of whatever make, feel miles better than old tyres, whicbh often leads people to say "OMG thes new dunlops/pirellis/contis are AMAZING, those last dunlops/pirellis/contis were SHIT!". These people are fools, IMO.

yeah i get what your saying mate, thanks for advice. i will look into the book you said.
im aware that its in my head, but as the tyres are close to needing replacing i was thinking of a tyre which ( although may be no different) will make me feel more confident, if that makes sence?

thanks for the help guys

Pilot Road 2 lasted well on my GSXR 1000 whilst still giving me the confidence to spank it.

BT090?

Bridgestone BT090, the most popular tyre for sports 400s. Comes in a 150 width rear which I imagine is what the NC35 takes.

Dunlop sportmax Q2

Yeppers they are for a 600, but 400's weigh the same as if not more than a modern 600.

Those Tyres are not a problem, unless squared off. I got my knee down on a Pilot Road front and Macadam rear. Only briefly but it made my day. Diablo Corsas are such an improvement I can't even begin to describe it!

Bridgestone BT-023s are available in a 150 section rear. Much more modern and versatile tyre than the 090, I'll be going for a pair once I've sorted my 400s front end out.

The 016 is an all out sports tyre, super stick, short life. I would expect 4000 miles out of one on my 600, (not from experience)

The 023 is a sports/touring tyre, capable enough for most situations, medium/long life. I am expecting at least 8000 miles from the 023's.

I have the 023's on the CBR and I am very happy with them.

My dad did the Ron Haslam track day last summer and they were using 016 tyres on the track, Ron was doing laps on a fireblade with a pillion and still getting his knee down using 016's.

I would say the 023 will be more than enough for a 400cc bike Thumbs Up
