Following the service manual to do a service on my bike, and it states to use a socket to remove the plug, which is pretty standard, but i came across this (picture on the right) it looks like the plugs are inside some kind of sealed case with no visible way to remove them, any ideas how to remove it? or am i just being a total moron!

What you are looking at is the spark plug cap and coil. They have individual coils on each cylinder. They are supposed to be a waterproof fit to the cylinder head so can be a bit tight. Once the coil/cap has been removed you should be able to use a looooong reach spark plug socket.

They're not in that casing, that casing pushes on top of the spark plug, think of it as a weird shaped plug cap.
So you pull that out and the spark plug is at the bottom of the hole...

They are to stop water from getting to the plugs.
