Got Mod 1 for 3rd time on Tuesday, both failures previously have been for locking the rear (never locked it when practicing must be nerves), so I was thinking when doing the stops is it possible just to grab the front to make sure I don't lock the back or will I do an 'endo' thanks

It should be hardly any pressure on the rear mate. Just a smidgen. As for the front, squeeze a little bit to load the forks and force the front wheel into the tarmac harder. Then progressively squeeze it on Wink

Just rest your foot on the rear brake and as your weight shifts when you pull the front you'll use enough rear automatically without realising and locking up the rear.

"Endo" on a push bike, "stoppie" on a motorbike. Wink

If you're going to do a stoppie, you'll do one regardless of what you do with the rear brake.

A motorcycle will only actually lift the rear wheel if the front suspension is pretty much bottomed out.

Your suggestion has merit. Apply the rear brake very slightly for the look of it. During an emergency stop, there is almost no weight on the rear wheel anyway so it'll lock up very easily. Almost all the braking will be coming from the front wheel if you're braking hard as your weight is thrown forwards. The back brake is there for stability, balance and slow speed control.

That's why sportsbikes have twin 9 or 10" discs with 6-piston callipers on the front and a single 6" disc with a 1 or 2 piston calliper on the rear.

NEVER 'Grab' brakes!
Apply fast and firmly! Never 'grab' or 'snatch'!
Its the suddenness of application that will make the wheel lock.

You can do it fine in practice, not on test. So nerves.

THATS the problem here, isn't it? Not what you are doing with the bike.

Whats the old advice they give actors and people speaking in public, against stage-fright? Imagine the audience naked, or remeber when they go to the bog, they use toilet roll too!

Your 'audience' is the test examiner.... just picture them naked, or in the toilet! Take a few deep breaths, CALM DOWN, shrug your shoulders, its NOT like its the most important thing in the world, or the worlds going to end if you cock it up, or the examiner is going to scream and shout at you, call you an idiot or send you to the head-masters office if you get it wrong, and just fucking do it! Like you have done hundreds of time, in practice!

Whats the worst that can happen! you can run the bugger over! (as my mother did on her e-stop!)

There you are, remember this one, and chuckle before doing it; woman, on Vespa scooter, in open face lid. Examiner tells her to get up to speed, then do an emergency stop when he signals.

She does. Comes to a complet and controlled halt. Examiner walks up to her, tells her to put it in neutral, while he gives her the next set of instructions.... she releases clutch..... its NOT in neutral!

Scooter rears up, wheelies OVER the examiner! Cliboard goes flying, paper scatters! One VERY embarressed and 'failed' test candidate! You cant cock it up as spectacularly as that, so laugh, and get on with it!

To expand on this. I was told to imagine I was squeezing a tennis ball. If I squeezed too hard the bike will bite me but if I start gently and then apply a constant but firm pressure I'll be able to stop without it locking up.

Agree with the above.

My work chumrade was advised by his instructor to just put his foot on the rear but not use it (only in the Mod 1!). It's not like the examiner can tell if you're pressing it - he's just looking to see if the rear locks up.

Of course, that's a bit wank - you should be tested on your normal riding behaviour, but performance anxiety can hit anyone. So do what you need to get through it, just don't get into the habit of ignoring the rear.
