Putting the Four back together for the new season today, I starting tightening one of the R&G bungs which doubles as and engine mount. As soon as it got tight it cracked and became loose again, I undid it and looked and the most of the thread seems to have come out on the bolt. I didn't do it up to tight there was hardly any pressure on it. I assume a helicoil is the best bet, does anybody have any experience with this?

There are 3 other bolts holding the engine in and I have screwed the crap one in it goes about after way and given it a liberal coating of thread lock. Would it be a really bad Idea to ride it?

Anyone have any experience with this?

I wouldn't ride it until it's secure, but I'm a giant pansy. Laughing

I'm sure G's R6 was very similar, and he rode that for ages.

I rode my Bandit with 2 snapped mounts for 6 months with no ill effects.

I would get it sorted though, I certainly don't recommend ignoring it for any length of time.

I've yet to have a good helicoil expirence...
However i've always been able to get away with tapping to the next size up. That of course requires a new engine bolt, and some of those things are big and expensive...

Sucks mate, personally I'd end up doing a little poo if I lost an engine mount and had to ride it. Perhaps try calling R+G and see if they can supply a bolt with a larger thread diameter (i.e. one from another bike) and have the mount tapped.

I do wonder why bike manufacturers don't have purpose built bung mounting points, seems a bit silly to have to use the thread of a critical mounting point to take the brunt of a crash. When I binned my CBR I stripped a bit of the thread from the bung mount, it was just an M8 fairing mount though so it didn't really matter too much.

It's not missing it just won't tighten. Bikes can fuck right off the tdm alarm caught fire yesterday, this happened today and when I tried the ride it, coolant was pissing out of the rad. I was ridding my push bike to the pub and the front wheel bearings made a bid for freedom. FML

Indeed, I did half a racing season with the r6 missing engine mounts - well, I had them, but use superglue or something to hold them in to make it look ok for scrutineering Laughing.
Can remember at some point chucking one off into the grass at Lydden while lined up in the grid when no one was looking, as I didn't want it falling on track for the person behind me to run over.

Helicoil, timersert or similar is going to be your best bet.
Another possibility is there may be space to drill right through and have a nut on the back - if you can, I'd do that, but usually it's half-concealed.
You can also get it welded up and re-tapped, but expect that to be a load of hassle if the engine's in the bike.

How deep is the tapped hole for the bolt? Could it be the thread pulled because you needed a longer bolt because of the crash bungs? I would check the current engagement depth and see what's left in there to take a longer bolt first.

It is a longer bolt the bolt itself is about 4-5" with the last 1-1 1/2" threaded. It has been fine as it was for 4 years, it was fine when I took the bung out (November time) I have no idea why it decided to do this now. The only time it has been over on that bung was 3 years ago.

Can it be helicoiled if the thread is a good 4" from the hole? Or would it be an engine out job?

The thread must always be in a hole - top tip for you there.

Initially thought the bolt went straight through the frame and part of the engine and bolted on the inside (The Tuono is like this). In which case, all you'd need is a new bolt.

Is it the thread in the Engine casing?

New engine!

You know what I mean the thread is that far recessed.

Not familiar with the speed 4 but If the hole is not blind you maybe able to tap it from the back then fit the coil from the front assuming there is a spacer in between the motor and the frame.
