Ordered a stebel compact the other day, still hasn't arrived so forgive me if this is glaringly obvious once the package arrives.

What is the max current they draw?

Does some/a 30 amp cable, fuse holder and relay with a 20 amp fuse sound about right?

Also, as I can't be arsed to go measure it with a horn blaring in my ear does anyone know an approximate current drawn by a standard type 12v horn?

I think mine said 25A, so I'd go with 30A cable and a 25A fuse. I THINK a standard horn draws roughly 10A.

Google reckons ~18A for the nautilus. I had a ring air horn compressor (which I reckoned was the same as the nautilius compressor) and that definitely pulled just shy of 25ish amps.

I'm sure I still have the original instructions from my Nautilus compact... I'll try to dig them out and/or scan it when I get home later Thumbs Up

One piece of advice - DO NOT "test" your Stebel Nautilus in an enclosed space ... I made that mistake, not realising how LOUD they are Shocked LOL

Cheers for the offer Thumbs Up but I should be all good; I have plenty of fuses already in the garage so it's just the cable, fuse holder and the relay that need to be rated accordingly. So long as it isnt pulling >30A then the rest can wait until I have the thing and the instructions in my hands.

Do they come with any parts other than the unit itself? How about a bracket or a relay etc?

Just installed one on my SV - brackets needed bending to fit both horns where the origional was so they didn't foul on the forks but was easy enough, and i just plugged them straight into the witing for the old horn, worked perfectly fine and very loud.

i imagine if you help the horn on for 10 / 15 secs it might start to do some damage with wires heating up etc, but seems to be perfectly fine when using for normal horn applications !!!

if i get time i'll change later on and add a relay and some better wire, but works perfectly fine for now !

QFT, i tested mine with a leasure battery in an 8x6 shed, i couldnt hear propperly for a good 2 hours. Laughing

Much entertainment can be had by asking your mate to 'have a quick look down there at *instert generic part close to your horn* for me) and blasting it when ther ear is right next to the compressor though.

Cheers
John

I really want to get a stebel nautilus. i got a Bandit600, but i don't want to faff with the wires and relays cz i know i'll balls it up.

Is it possible to do a quick switcheroo with the existing one?

My horn circuit has a 10A fuse, I am guessing the rest of the circuit isn't up to an awful lot more than that. If you just swapped them over you risk burning the ciruit out as too much current flows through too thin a cable.

Seems like lots of people do and get away with it but I'd rather spend a few £ and a few minutes and do it properly Thumbs Up .

Tempted to fit a SPDT switch on it too so I can switch between normal and uber horn.

Ah, one more question to the stebel nautlius owning folk, how weatherproof are they? i.e. Can the open hole of the horn be facing into the salt, water and other road shite or is it best to be pointing away from it?

They are designed as a nautical horn I am pretty certain they will be fine in the elements Thumbs Up

Mine has been fitted to the Bandit for the best part of a year. I've been commuting and riding in all weathers, and never had a problem with it...

The Stebel unit came with wiring instructions, diagram and a relay. The bracket to fit it to the bike frame was "customised" from a curtain pole bracket

EDIT : Just found a pic that I took the day it was fitted... Thumbs Up

No they are not designed as a nautical horn and water kills the diaphragms if it goes up the trumpet. When I fit them I make sure the trumpet faced down and rearward every time.

If the trumpet is exposed to the elements drill a 1/8th drainage hole on the lowest part of the trumpet.

I've put one on the SV and had one on the NSR before just wired up in place of the horn and they have both worked fine - although it has to be said when wired up in the garage via a relay before going on the bike they were a lot louder. They're still an awful lot louder than a regular horn though.

This isn't rocket science, they are a piece of piss to wire with the relay. Stock horn wires go to two of the connectors, then a heaviver one from the battery to the relay, relay to horn & then a ground from the horn to the frame or battery etc. Takes 5 minutes.
