Only making this thread because it's really interesting to know your bike history, and I really have enjoyed the test thread and peoples stories!

So tell me, why did you choose your bike, how, when and if you have had more than one, tell me about them! Also if they had any problems you have had to fix.

Let's keep it your favourite 5 bikes, or 5 bikes of choice if you own like 33. Ahem.

The feeling you had when you bought it and rode it!

First bike!

Current bike!

Current bike: VTR1000F Firestorm.

Reason for chosing it is because I love the sound of the V twin engine. My DAS instructor has the TL1000 and it sounded like thunder when he opened it up. So much so that I couldnt hear the engine of the ER5 below me over his noise in front. I set my heart on either a TL, SV, or VTR.

Since I only passed my test last year I checked around and all seemed to say the same thing. The TL is a bit of an untamed animal and the SV was a better ride. So I dissmissed the TL and the SV was out of my budget (650 just wasnt considered) and that left the Firestorm. I love the look of the bike and the noise so started looking for one of them. Eventually finding one one I have now after missing one on ebay by a single bid!

Feeling when I rode it the 70 miles home started off as "ok this is different than the GSXR" and since it was pissy wet weather I couldnt really do much with it apart from poddle along. By the time I got half way home and the sky cleared and the roads dried somewhat and I thought I would have fun. National speed limit carriage ways and away I went. Such a different pull than the Gixxer and I was grining like a madman when I heard the engine clatter beneath me as the thing took off. The roundabouts outside Chichester were confidence inspiring. I had to check myself because going round a roundabout at 60 was a little bit too fast but she would do it with ease. I had more confidence on the VTR than I did on the GSXR. Perhaps because of the different riding position, Perhaps because of the different engine set up or perhaps because of the fact it was my bike rather than a borrowed mates bike.

Now though, having lived with the bike for a few months I can honestly say I still love the beast as much now as I did on that first ride. We've had a bit of a falling out because the batterys toast but the new one is ordered and we'll be best buddies again.

So what if the tank range is not even as far as I can piss. I start the beastie up and the kittens run for their lives as it barks into life. I wouldnt change it for the world (Ok perhaps for an SP2) Laughing

I always have liked bandits, and due to my height I struggle on sports bikes. I had the opportunity to buy the bandit and I got it at a good price and it was local.

The reason for the XT, I started riding bikes on the farm where I grew up and have liked the trail style bike. So I now have the best of both.

bought the gsxr because i have always wanted a sports bike and can only afford to insure a 600. Love the look of the gsxr and its fast Smile. Had a problem with the front master cylinder but that was down to me putting a caliper banjo bolt into it Sad

Current bike: Street Triple R

I chose it because I wanted something a little less focused then a sportsbike but still had most of the perks.

The Triple sounds fantastic, rides fantastic, handles fantastic, looks fantastic etc.. I also quite liked the idea of owning something British, not because it's British but because it's bloody brilliant!

This is very true. Heres a pic of our Paxo taken with his dear old mother on a day trip to london.

https://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01482/talllest-man_1482513i.jpg

Sadly the mother got sepperated and he had to call the police to find help find her. Here he hit his first problem.

ALthough it wasnt a total disaster. He did manage to pull

And of course he met 'little' me

Now I'm going to hide before he murders me dead for this! Laughing

First bike was a Derbi Gpr 50.

Reason:

I wanted a geared bike, as I had the intentions of becoming a proper biker. Great looks, great handling, and cheap as chips to run!

Second bike/current bike/written off bike, Yamaha FZS 600 Fazer

Reason:

Was looking at either a Hornet, or Bandit, or Fazer. Went for the Fazer as there was one local at a very cheap price. Preferred it over the Bandit for styling, and at the time there weren't any Hornets in my budget.

Good bits:

Good on fuel, great to ride, great with pillion, comfortable, quick as I ever was going to need. Was generally a great bike all round.

Problems:

Mine suffered from the downpipes rotting, the carb rubbers were perishing, needed a fair bit of maintainance, but I wasn't careful when choosing.

Current bike: CBR600f 2001

I did my DAS and test (July 09) shortly after my brother did his. He had a CBR600F sport as his first bike and I fit on it pretty well, it looked cool, went fast, was reliable etc etc.

When it came to looking for my own bike I initially wanted a 600 bandit as they are cheap, plentiful and pretty friendly to a ham fisted newbie. As with pretty much anything I buy I started to look at what I could get for another £100 here and there. I went from wanting a bandit 600, to a fazer 600, to a bandit 1200, to a hornet 600 where I figured I could do with some fairings so started looking at sports bikes. I figured a 600 sports bike should suit me well and then remembered the bike my bro had owned (and since sold) so I started looking for one of them.

Scouted ebay and found one in yellow in the welsh valleys that I was watching and hadn't met it's reserve. I phoned the fella up and went to have a look. It made me do a sex wee. The guy started it up in his garage and among the fumes and CO poisoning the bike was bright yellow, loud as fook , aggresive as hell and about £500 under 'market' value. It had a few issues, the downpipes were made of brown crust and made a tapping noise, the chain was old and a bit shagged and it would turn out to be a total PITA for a lot of reasons but I fell in love with it.

Paid the guy an extra £100 over the highest ebay bid (ended up paying the reserve amount) on the basis that he would ride it to my house 60 miles away. He rode it here about 3 days later, I had just passed my test and my first ride on it was the single most awesome memory I have. I took it down a country road near my house and let it rip (thinking back probably only to about 9k in second lol), the power and noise were addictive and frankly it's a bit upsetting that I have got used to the speed; don't think I'll feel like that again unless I upgrade to a litre bike.

I still love it even though it tried to kill me by taking a wee lie down in the ice and even though I have spent about £600 on non consumable parts keeping it working and even now it isn't perfect.

To be honest it is a good job he doesn't have a short fuse, or not wanting to murder you dead could be a tall order for him.

RS125 first bike and current bike, mainly because I love two stroke and wanted something sporty to get me into riding for when I go to a bigger bike, intend to keep it after I have passed my test, strip it all down and replace/clean everything that needs doing, polish the frame up properly etc.

Got a moped at 16, peugeot rs50 to muck about with my mates on theirs, that's all you need to know about that Razz

Soon as i hit 17 I bought a Honda NSR 125,
I was on the edge of getting an rs125 but was put off with all the stories of chavs ragging the f**k out of them and also because I met a guy with an NSR who kindly let me ride it around Homebase car park and I was instantly in love (with the bike ofc Razz )

Next a friend went for his big bike test (before new test came in) passed and got a GSXR 600 1997 and restricted it to 33bhp.
The NSR was actually quicker 0-60mph but I used to launch that thing like a pro Razz then the gsxr would edge away once you hit 90mph
Anyway I went on a few short rides on his GSXR, it was nice and big and not cramped, sounded amazing and so decided I wanted a carbed 600 aswell.

So I took my test and bought a Kawasaki zx6r F3 (1997) I would have bought a GSXR like my mate but didn't want to copy and a kawasaki appealed to me.

Inevitably I was 18, did not restrict it and proceeded to write it off at stupid speeds and was lucky I was sent over the bonnet of a van and not striaght into the side of it..

Sent on driver improvment course.. kept license and bought the F1 (1995) zx6r I have now which is ofcourse restricted Razz
20 next month, waaaay more responsible now. Thumbs Up

Aaaah my CBF125, brought it in August 2009, sweet little bike - Cheap, cracking run around and used to run it on whatever change I had from lunch since I didn't have a job then. I remember the day I had it delivered, I was waiting to do my CBT which was booked for the following week so just started it up and cleaned it, even though it was almost brand new Smile It was awesome riding it for the first time though having wanted a bike for most of my teens! Smile

Had that until May this year when I was starting to get bored of being left behind by my mates 2 strokes so got my test sorted and brought an SV650s.

First ride on that (restricted to 33bhp) felt awesome, so much powah! Then I had a go on my old man's CBR1000RRA (Never try a full power bike if yours is restricted, seriously) Shocked...Still loved the SV, the V Twin with the aftermarket exhaust sounded amazing! Had the time of my life til last year when I was knocked off by a van Sad

But hey, I'm moving to North Wales in September for University so roll on a new bike and the welsh roads! Twisted Evil

Only had 2 bikes.

NSR125R, geared and could easily be derestricted.

CBR900RR, fell in love with them back in the day when they were the poster bikes of the era. Decided then I would get one eventually. Can't imagine ever selling it. Happily commutes to and fro and then lets it's hair down at the weekends.

Unless someone was to offer a swap on a Super-Moto. I think that is the only way I would wave it off.

RXS - because it was offered to me for £100 and was only 4 years old (in 1990). But has turned out to be ludicrously cheap, simple and reliable for getting about on. This rusty old shitheap has no lights to speak of, no brakes to speak of, no power to speak off and almost every component is worn out...but it's my one true love and the only bike I've ever had that I would never sell for any amount of money.

Bandit - one of the very few modern(ish) bikes that's not some vile piece of multicoloured Lego and actually looks, goes and feels like a proper bike should. I love making people on sporty stuff look ridiculous when out on the Bandido Laughing

GPz750 - it was too cheap to refuse. It's a pretty gruesome old dog but I've grown kind of fond of it.

PX125 - it was too cheap to refuse. Bizarre twist grip gearchange baffles and is one of various reasons I very rarely ride the Snail.

WR360 - it's brilliant fun on fields. Thankfully it doesn't have clocks so I'm not sure just how appalling the fuel consumption is. I suspect around the 20-25mpg range.

Cagiva Mito - it was too cheap to refuse. It'll cost me a bit to put it right enough to sell for a reasonable price. I might ditch the fairing (which is all cracked and bodged anyway) and ride it. It's derestricted and is supposed to do about 100 - mine does about 65 thanks to massive bore wear Laughing

Cygnus 125 scooter - just because I had a low budget and I wanted to get on 2 wheels asap.

DTR 125 - was bored of the twist n go, needed more noise and some gears Very Happy Passed my test on it and kept it for a few months without the L's, wish I hadn't sold it.

DRZ 400 - first "big bike", had to venture to Scotland to get it, nearly got in a head on collision in the process (in the van) because of a cager in a people carrier overtaking a wagon on a blind corner.

Still not 100% sure on the DRZ, lacks soul compared to my old DTR.

I think I was really lucky to grow up in an era with less restrictions and some awesome bikes with character.
Bikes went like this -
YDS7 Yam, 100mph 250 with spannies rear sets and race tank and seat
RD 400 Yam more standard but fast, again tuned and raced.
350YPVS Yam (had a few of these) tuned with 36mm carbs and spannies, fast but fragile, ate cranks until it was rebuilt with rd500 big ends.
RG 500 Suzy, didn't race this but wish I still had it.
TZ350 Yam, race only but a classic.
See a pattern? I just loved strokers that you could ride on the road and turn up and race at a meeting.
Had 'em all stripped for pistons/cranks at least once, and filed a lot of ally out of cylinders 'tuning', some more successfully than others!
In those days i used 'em for everyday transport and bikes were my life, every penny (and more) going into them.

These were amongst the first 5 but had some lemons as well. Current bike is an Aprillia dorsoduro factory, got that cos I was fed up of sports bikes, still got a couple of 2 stroke racers that get out every now and then.

Hi

First bike was a Honda H100. Wanted an RXS but the only one I could find was bent and the H100 turned up at a good price. Couldn't afford the insurance on a 125 (insurance then was based on capacity, and a 125 doubled the insurance compared to a 100). Liked it and wish I had been able to keep it. Did a couple of thousand mile on it then crashed it (my fault), which made a mess. Fixed it and did about another 5000 miles then got hit by a car. Took 6 months for the insurance to pay out, after which I fixed it up and rode it for a while before selling it. Had bought it when I lived in NI, and brought it with me when I moved to Portsmouth (brought it down from Liverpool on the train).

When I passed my test I bought a CB400N. The cam chain on that went (as they had a habit of) so I landed up riding my MBX125 that I still had. Decided I preferred 2 stroke 125s so sold the 400 and bought an Aprilia AF1 (one of the first Aprilias in the country). Still got the AF1. Not the most reliable bike but did loads of miles and worked well solo or with a pillion (5 gallon tank was useful). Got plenty of spares these days for it and no intention of selling it. Landed up leading on to buying an AF1 Futura, which I traded in for an RS125, and later landed up buying an AF1 Sintesi (and even later finding my old AF1 Futura and buying it back).

Had a bike as transport when doing some work in Aus, and when I came back fancied a 1200 Bandit. Wanted something large and flexible but without a fairing. Performance was adequate, comfy, reliable. Liked the looks. Decent size tank. Carries a pillion fine. Landed up getting tuned.

Bought the Bimota as I always fancied one. I started riding bikes in the late 1980s and the Bimota YB4 and YB6 were at the top of the pipe then. Wanted a YB4 but couldn't find one, and when the Dieci turned up I landed up buying that. Previous owner (the 2nd owner) only had it about a month (had 2 Bimotas, sold one to pay for his wedding and got ripped off on a bankers draft so had to sell the Dieci). The first owner turns up at the Stafford show quite often. In some ways it is a lousy bike (suspension is WAY too stiff, but at the front the problem is that the springs are possibly too light and the only adjustment is the damping). But in other ways with the way things are made it is lovely. Definately a bike designed by a person rather than a committee, and quite obvious that what they didn't care about got ignored. Lots of satisfaction sometimes and a nightmare at other times. Really should spend some money getting the suspension rebuilt for my weight.

All the best

Keith

I didn't realise we could talk about the bikes we'd had in the past. Thought it was just current stuff. Mind, I can't even remember all the bikes I've had this many years down the road Embarassed

I bought my first bike, a CBR600RR before ever riding a bike. I went for a quick trip around the block on a mate's 250 something and that was it, I was getting a bike. It sat in my garden until I could get my DAS passed. Oh, I chose it because the local dealer was a Honda dealer and at the time I saw the underseat pipe and thought "I'm having some of that!"

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/71.jpg

Unfortunately, that ended up as

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/IMGP2334.jpg

because of

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/IMGP2326.jpg

turning right in front of me.

So off I trot with my insurance money and a payout from Johnny uninsured Foreigner and bought the Kwak with 500 miles on the clock

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/DSC00070.jpg

Loved that bike and ragged it all over the SE with the SE lot and did a few track days on it and all was hunky dory until Mike J got knocked off his bike by Bianca from Eastenders and went and bought a dirt bike. Had a go on that and it was bye bye road riding.

Got myself a little XR250 to have a go at this offroading lark

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/DSC00037.jpg

and the Ninja only got ridden to the MOT in 6 months so it was sold. Had lots of fun getting muddy on the XR but wanted a little more power so got a XR400 as well

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/DSC01251.jpg

It was just as I hoped - like the 250 but with more oomph. Never rode the 250 again so that was sold. The 400 served me well but was a pig to restart after being dropped and was a bit of lump to be picking up in deep, slippery mud.

A chance to buy a Gas Gas EC250 came up so I bit his hand off

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/DSC01747.jpg

It is like a mountain bike to ride compared to the XR but was much, much more fun as the two-stroke motor is great. Plus after a knackering day's riding it can be picked up easily. It can be quite tiring to ride as it's pretty harsh but the fun factor makes up for it.

This offroad malarky and the ride reports on here made me want to try something a little more adventurous so I decided to set upon doing the Trans-American Trail in the summer of 2012 so that obviously needs a suitable bike so up popped a localish XT600E for decent money

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/IMG_0230-2.jpg

That will be the bike to take me all the way across the US offroad Praying

I've also had these

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/100_1355.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/b6e62e74.jpg

But they had to go.

Yup, that's pretty much it.

I bought this because I just wanted something to learn on and be able to easily sell on once I had done my test. Passed my test in 2007 and I was 19 so had a 33bhp license:
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/lewis203/FIRST.jpg

DRZ400SM
I bought this brand new, it was my first big bike and I loved it. Had loads of fun on it, done a few mods to it and learned a lot:

ZX6R
I wanted to try a sportsbike and this was the first one I had ever ridden. Blew my mind how fast it was and I then spent the next year riding everywhere at ridiculous speeds. I done 2 trackdays on it and had my first motorbike crash on it, 70mph highside at a track day. Every bit of fairing was smashed, dented tank, cracked stator cover and a dent in the frame from the bar end. I fixed it all and sold it.

KTM 625 SMC
After the ZX6R I wanted another supermoto to slow myself down which worked, but I ended up doing wheelies everywhere and even done a wheelie in front of an unmarked police car. Supermotos are an absolute blast to ride but not much use apart from short blasts so I sold it:

Yamaha R1
I wanted another sportsbike but since I like working on bikes almost as much as I like riding them I wanted an older carb-fed bike so I got the R1. Not had it long and only ridden it on cold wet roads but it's fast and hope to keep it for a long time:

In order and in a nut shell.

Honda NSR125

I had been looking/dreaming about bikes for a while and saw one in a Honda dealer and thought it was ace. A mini CBR! Sweet! Went to Majorca for a week and everyone was on them (Repsol paint mostly), which made me want one even more. Came home, bought one. (A Honda mechanic did a job or two or as foreigners from home he had an XJR and it made my widgey twitch).

GSXR750L
Got offered a 1990 model by a mate, bought it.

ZXR400L1

Bikeless, the nearest bike to me at the time, bought it out of desperation, loved it, spent money on it, sold it.

XJR1300

I wanted something that going to cope 2 up with luggage, tent etc and not be a sports bike due to an iffy back but have enough poke for overtakes etc and have a proper pillion seat. Originally went to look at Bandit 1250's but sat on it etc and it didn't feel right. Bloke said there were 3 XJR's in the other room and I'd probably prefer one them, my widgey twitched. Went home to think about it. Talked about it non stop all night. Annoyed the missus. She sent me back the next morning to put a deposit down (At least that's how I remember it) Came back with a used 'JR. Just started to upgrade the suspension and made the Zorst louder.

Bought my first bike (TS50ER) partly because all my experience was with off road bikes, but mainly because I'm not a small chap and everything else was tiny!

The RD250 came along when I was still 16, from a bloke I worked with; he'd bought it new 18 months before, but didn't really get on with strokers, so I got it for a bargain price, then he got a CBX thou, which he kept in his hallway!!!

Rode that for a while, but wanted something that didn't need quite as much looking after (I was a courier) so I traded the old 50 for a new GS550, which then got written off (not by me) when it was 3 weeks old, so I went back to the dealer and bought another one.

Then came a succession of despatch fodder, plus a few not so practical big bangers (there was a sort of informal competition among despatchers then, involving who could despatch the most ridiculous machine, hence CBX, Z13 etc).

Somewhere in there I ended up with a C90, when my brother decided he wanted to learn how to ride and bought two non runners, with the intention of making one good bike; I got them both running, so we had one each and I used to follow him about, passing on the benefits of my extensive knowledge (?!).

After I stopped riding for a living, I just indulged myself with whatever took my fancy, rode it for a bit, then swapped it, normally for something completely different.

Had a break from riding for a few years, then I was flipping through Ebay one day, with no real intention of buying anything, when I saw my current Zed; I'd tried to buy one when they were new, but couldn't find one and didn't expect to see one that wasn't chopped, triked or factory fresh and stupid money, so when this came up, I had to have it.

Unless something untoward happens, I can't see me ever getting rid.

Almost every bike I ever bought was because it was a bargain. I got burned a few times, but not in the last 15 years or so Smile

Got another one lined up right now as a work bike.

Started doing this earlier but ended up writing too much just about the first Laughing (gave it its own thread https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=2748313#2748313

First bike was an 89 NS125F that I bought cheap, ended up fixing over the course of a year and managed to sell for profit, good times. Bought because I was stupid and wanted two wheels and didn't want to wait around for it (which is ironic given the result).

Second bike was a 92 GS500E which I bought off a mate of my dads straight after passing my DAS. I blindly said yes as soon as I got offered it, being too eager to get onto a big engined bike and then soon realising that I was getting bored of the power and that it had the purple and pink colour scheme was gayer than two guys space docking each other. It is however still with me and I plan to turn it into a tourer Smile

Third bike is the current one, 03 Blue ZX6R. I love it. Its everything I aspired for in biking. Nuff said Smile

I had me a Gilera ICE 50.
As my first legal bike on the road.

I turned 17 and started riding my Gilera Runner 125 which soon became my stunt bike.

https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f72/smeg2727/DSC00597.jpg

I past my test and bought a minging 1992 CBR600F.

Which also ended up stunted.

https://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f72/smeg2727/cbr.jpg

I sold that to pick up my 600RR, which is simply incredible.
