Hi guys, having some issues with my cbf. In December it started to get hot. Took it to the garage and they said the radiator was knackered, replaced it and it seemed the issue was solved. Started to overheat again last week so took it back. This time the Honda garage reckoned it was the radiator cap and replaced that. Ridden it out today and it's still (from my own experience of riding it) running hot. It smells hot and the temperature needle is just on the edge of the white marker where it crosses into red. I'm pretty narked off with the garage and feel like they don't really take me seriously. I'm doing a big trip into Europe in April and want some peace of mind that I'm not going to fry my engine. Do cbfs always run this hot? What else could be causing it? (checked the coolant meticulously and it's not losing or eating it in any quantity)

I'd be suspecting the thermostat.

Test it by checking the position when cold and then stick it in hot water and see what the position is.

Typically, the temp sensor is before the thermostat. Thermostat lets the hot water into the radiator.

If it isn't working, the radiator won't get the hot water and so can't cool it.

I'd be tempted to go back to the shop and ask for my working radiator back.

Filler cap broken? WTF?

Assuming that you are in the UK, then yes, it is unusual for a CBF600 to run that hot at this cold time of year.

Does the radiator fan kick in at all?

As others have said, sounds like the thermostat, but it could be the fan switch if the fan doesn't kick in.

If the temp is high when moving it's probably not the fan/switch.

If it's not holding pressure, it'll boil the coolant.

If so, the coolant would fuck off and the temp guage would say cold

Did they bleed the system properly? Air in the coolant would make it more of a insulator rather than a heat transferring liquid. Air could also get in through leaking hoses. Wink

Does the fan work at all though? I know it's not related, but at that temperature, the fan should kick in no matter what. The CB-1 I had would start the fan even when going 30 kph in the 6th gear, in a scorching summer. Not broken, just a feature, said by the owners of their CB-1's.

A faulty temp. gauge in combination with paranoia could also be an option. If the fan works, yet doesn't kick in, the gauge must be faulty.

EDIT: You can take off the cap from the highest point of the cooling system (the rad cap, I guess), start the engine, let it run until it gets hot enough for the thermostat to open the second circuit, let it buble a few minutes, turn it off, let it cool down a bit (just for you not to burn your fingers) and put the cap back on. This should get trapped air from the system.

Check youbook for videos.

Should have said *sufficient* pressure.

In that case you get a head of steam around the sensor and it reads hot. The actual leak can be fairly minor and can take a while for the level to drop significantly. The steam vents out through the header tank, is sneaky.

A chums Suzuki Anal Intruder did this, took an age to figure it out.

If not could be water pump related.

Fan check. Then thermostat change first. Then bleed system. If persists inspect pump.
