Today I did some listening, while testing the DSEE HX (Sony's audio upscale algorithm) using various mp3 files vs FLAC versions of the same songs. I am quite impressed, although the difference in most of the audio files is very subtle, meaing DSEE HX on/off vs FLAC. That's the correct word to describe the difference between mp3 files vs any Hi-res audio files, the difference is just subtle, in most cases.

The preamp of my new fancy headphones does DSEE HX. If you don't have such fancy headphones, but you still have a decent range headphones, the Music Center for PC (Sony's app) also allows for DSEE HX on your PC with no extra HW required. This can also by done with some Sony's smartphones and the Walkman, obviously.

TL; DR: For the most part, it is a nice feature to have. The difference is subtle but there and I would not pay extra to have it. It just happened the headphones I got had this technology.

Sony...quirky at times but think some of their DACs are the best.
Brilliant digital recorders n'all.

My 40yr old cassette deck is still working as good as ever.

Would be rude of me to omit...

Yes, Sony does make nice music playback devices. I use their Walkman NW-A45 from 2017 for all the Hi-res audio (I can even use the walkman as a DAC for my PC).

Actually, the WH-1000XM3 wired with the amp unit (headphones) on combined with the NW-A45 is a very nice combo. LDAC codec (bluetooth) is also very, very impressive. These headphones are my first device to really take advantage of this codec. Well, it's a waste of battery power to listen to mp3 files thought the LDAC (lesser quality codes sound the same, except for the very basic SBC codec which is not ideal for music playback of any kind, if you asked me), but FLAC and DSD files do benefit from the extra bandwidth, even if it can't match the proper Hi-res wired playback.

TL; DR: I enjoy my new headphones and they play nice with my Walkman DAP. Perhaps one of the best sounding closed back headphones I've used in years, either we talk about Hi-res music or MP3 files with the Sony's upscaling trickery, it is a treat to listen to music this way.

Remembering a lad from America; He'd come over to visit family and I did odd jobs for record buying, one being cutting their lawn in this posh little village. I was about 15 him a bit younger.
We hit it off immediately and made mixtapes.

This being my particular favourite from him.

[edit] His name escapes me...mind you we only met a few times. Smoking doobies and drinking what I believe to be expensive Cognac.

A gave the lastest Cypress Hill album, the Elephants On Acid (2018), a second listen. Well, I still do not like it. Their best work still remains the first three albums (1991, 1993 and 1995) and maybe the Skull CD of the Skull and Bones album.

It is shame though, as I expected a lot from the Elephants On Acid album.
