In the past two days I did a lot of critical listening to all sorts of music, both mp3 files and flac files and here's why...

I recently borrowed a dedicated usb DAC/headphone amp... one of those affordable Hi-res units with surreal bit depths and bit rates of 32 bit at 384kHz. Now, for whatever reason, and I might be just ignorant/deaf, I just did not like the way the DAC/amp sounded. I am fully aware that 32bit/384kHz is way, way beyond what any human can actually distinguish, but the audio just did not feel right. The treble was just uncomfortable, even piercing, I'd say. The rest felt the same to my usuall listening devices (PC/Walkman), perhaps a bit lacking in the sub-bass department.

Long story short, I tried a dedicated DAC/amp for my PC, did not like it one bit.

it could be your headphones that are the problem. it really does pay to listen to several different makes in a shop if you can.

i like the sound of planar headphones myself.

i use a Ifi Zen dac with my laptop and think it sounds great.

It's a money pit from which you won't escape and they (companies) know it.

Everyone's ears perceive sounds differently. Beats headphones may be spot-on for someone yet they'll find audiophile grade cans lacking in Bass or the Trebles are too brittle.

Like trying on new shoes the experience will change on the time of day and how you're feeling.

Don't get too hung-up on DACs Cables Materials used in the speaker drivers.
Tell yer the finest sounding music I heard was from a 70s jukebox..dunno if it was even in stereo but it really thumped and the vocals/guitars were smokingly good. I suspect they'd be paper cones not Kevlar or carbon fibre. Also reckon I was quite smashed and in a really good mood.

Hey don't get me wrong the kevlar cones in my reasonably priced Wharfedales £99 the pair...new) powered by a 250w Crown style amp do look and sound good to me in my treated room but are they crap compared to a friends B&Ws?
No frickin' way.

I use HD650s and K271s for cans...they're very common in music studios for tracking and critical listening (not so much for pleasure listening) plus spare parts are still available and they were made decades ago...suspect they strike a good balance between (audio) quality, robustness and price.

Flac Ogg Vorbis Wav MP3...Unless you're a mastering engineer and a good one at that we'd be hard pushed to tell if 320kb/s vs 24bit Wav file is better than the other. Maybe if you're a teenager that still can hear all the high end frequencies you may...I doubt it.

Whoever said try some out in a shop...well does that shop have a decent booth or a proper speaker room and I'll say will those 1k speakers sound the same in your less than ideal room.

I'll hush now as audiophiles are the worst of all the philes Very Happy

Yep. I remember well a time I was STONED AF. Someone was playing an obscure non-chart Bowie album. Assum it was.
Problem with listening to music when baked is describing it to the lassie in Virgin when you try to buy the same album. Embarassed

I'll go back to my Walkman and PC sound card. I just wanted to try what all the kids were talking about (dedicated DAC/AMP from FiiO) and did not like it. The sound signature, if that's what it's called, of the dedicated DAC/AMP just did not feel pleasant to my ears. It was also sort of fiddly, as my PC would not recognise the unit right away after a reboot.

As for headphones, I use HD660S, as an introduction into the world of open back headphones after years of Sony closed back headphones and in-ear phones of all sorts. Now, right out of the box, using my digital Walkman as a music source and even my PC sound card (flat EQ on both), I very much liked how the HD660S sounded and I still do. A real ''ear opener'', if you know what I mean.

Yes, definitely. What I do notice is the final mix and the dynamic range (NOTE: feck the dB wars and V-shaped EQ conspiracy! Old CDs/Vinyl (mix) do sound much nicer with an actual dynamic range), not quite the audio quality. Sure, if the sample rate goes way bellow 44kHz (or like 128kbps bit rate and lower), I can quite cleary tell, the clarity and range is gone. That being said a 320kbps (even 256kbps) mp3 vs flac, I can't tell the difference and I'd be just guessing which is which. 16bit vs 24bit vs 32bit bit depth, it's the same story. 16bit being CD audio quality, I'm very much alright with that.
