https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/home

Lots of new ratings on the "Sharp" test for helmets. Worth checking out as there is a massive amount of variation between similar models of the same brand.

I know there is some controversy over whether the results have any real-world bearing, but I would still prefer a 5-star helmet to a 2-star one!!

PS. Mine is 5-star Mr. Green Thumbs Up

I reckon they're pretty good as far as tests can go. They at least use real world data when compiling their ratings. Again not sure how they do this, but it's better than just taking a makers word for it.
To some it throws up more questions, for others it makes buying easier.

I chose my helmet with my wallet first, then it had to have an internal sun visor (senstive eyes to bright lights) Then fit. Finally came across the SHARP tables.
Not the correct order, but i got what i needed.

Guess i struck lucky with my V2R

It's interesting how price seems to have no effect on the safety ratings of these helmets. I.e. My 80 quid helmet is 5-star, while many more expensive helmets are 1 or 2 star.

I would certainly check this before buying a new helmet.

Woooo 5 stars ! Although it appears that in an impact my Caberg will leave green ovals on my freshly shaven head.

My Shark RSF3 is a 4* helmet.

I think what lets it down is the side protection is of orange ovalness.

KBC xp3 4 stars.. orange blood leaking from above my ears apparently.. could case some problems..

Agreed that there seems to be no relevence between price and stars.. although certain makes seem more consistent then others..

My new Duchinni is a 4*

and just out of curiosity I tried looking for my old AGV V-Flyer. They're not being produced any more, but has been replaced by the Stealth, which is a 5*

This has thrown a right ol' spanner in the works for my search for a new helmet.

Headed over to J&S in Northwich last weekend and found the comfiest and best fitting helmets where the rather nice Dainese D181 and the HJC IS-MAX, both of which performed quite badly in the sharp tests!

With this fresh knowledge, I think I'll head back and try the Duchini D909, AGV Longway, and the Caberg V2R (again) and see which of those feels best on.

Arai's seem to be utter bollocks for side impacts. I guess that's the result of those flimsy side pods, and the large gaps over the tops of your ears.

Agreed.

My Box BX1 is a 4 star, but I knew that as it was written on the box Razz It is very interesting how many expensive and well respected brands like Arai do pretty terribly. Maybe helmets they design in the future will take the SHARP tests into account...

Dont let that stop you, even if a helmet has a 5 star rating, but it fits you crap, a helmet that fits you snuggly with a 2 star rating will give you better protection Wink

Cheers! I guess if I find two that fit well and are snuggly but one's a 2-star and the other's a 5-star, that I should go for the 5-star one!

I always feel like I'm trying to make the cheaper helmets fit better, as I'm on a fairly small budget.

hehe good reply!

Whilst working at HG - the S4 was rated high with 5 stars. Yet a the claw part of a hammer went right through.. Yet the Condor was fine.
Since that day I never beleive the test and stick to what I know/seen is best for me Cool

Surely the idea should be to get a 4 or 5 star one (PLENTY to choose from) that fits your head and your budget?

I'm trying to pick between like five of them at the moment...

BTW, Duchinni D619... 4* ...... D609? 1*. Wow. You probably wouldn't even tell a difference between them to look in the shop. Wanna bet that the higher model number has been produced to address weaknesses revealed by testing in the lower?

And ... attacking with a claw hammer ... erm... how likely is it you're going to crash into one of those? I'll take the helmet that offers better blunt-object impact protection thanks, for things like the roadway, or a car door.

WOW My £40 Arashi is 3 star, at the other end of the scale only 1 of the 4 Schuberth helmets does better (the C2 at 4 stars)

I don't feel so bad about being skint now Laughing
