I Went out on the bike ( B6 ) today first time since October

while going along the road up though the gears the rev counter is jumping about mega- from 7000 rev to red line.
If i stop the bike and just rev bike to 5000 revs and hold it at that the needle moves from 5000 to 7000 spontaniously
Noticed once i was on motorway sitting at 5500 to 6000 revs in top gear it just sat there

any ideas maybe no explaining it very well but basically it no right whats happening could it be a dodgy connection with it lying outside under a cover all winter or a coil problem ?
Any suggestion would be appreciated

Erratic Tacho is often an indication that the regulator is on the way out. But depends on where the tacho gets its signal.
Did you have toi charge the battery before starting the bike up?
Did you per-chance connect charger with the battery on the bike?
Further, did it happen to be a higher-amp car-battery charger?
And was the battery a bit 'old' to begin with?

No did not have to charge battery before starting it. It was a new battery last year i did have an optmate on it during the cold spell though .
I took the tank off today and cleaned the contacts on my coils . will take clocks out tomorrow and see if there is any corrosion there . not sure where it get the reading from thought it might be coils or could it be alternator ?
