Hey all, I have just come back from a ride and it seems my back wheel has become wobbly , it is tightened up fine so I expect I have ruined a bearing, but before I order a new one it would be great to have your opinions? I have included a blown up image of my back wheel to see if you can identify which part it is if I am wrong.

Change all the bearings in the wheel. Somewhere like Wemoto will help you - give them a ring and tell them what you need. Failing that there's usually bearing kits on eBay.

There's always a bearing supplier as well if you have the bearing numbers.

Were the wheel nuts slack? if not then it could have been a worn cush drive also called the wheel damper(bit of rubber behind the sprocket)

were the wheel nuts slack when you tightened them or did you just go mental and over-tighten them?

No. If it has a standard, two-sided swingarm, it will have three bearings, two in the wheel, one in the sprocket carrier.

If it has a single sided swingarm... well it gets a bit more complicated.

Before you go buying bearings actually have I look at it.

It could be the shock linkage of even just a loose rear spindle.

Also it will have 3 bearings like stinkwheel said.

If it turns out you need new bearings it's worth checking out a bearing supplier as well as the bike dealers and parts stockists.

In the past, when i've had to replace bearings, the bearing stockists have alwas worked out cheaper!

All you need is the number, off the original bearing, and they will be able to supply you with the equivalent!

Equivalent, or to be frank, usually both better and about half the price of OE ones. They put cheap, shitty open bearings on a lot of bikes as standard. If you go to a bearing factors with the bearings or the bearing numbers, they'll be able to do you good quality, sealed ones which you wont need to touch for many years. Fit and forget.

I have no idea why they still fit open bearings on bike wheels (other than cost).

Hi

Part 17 is the bearing, and there are 2 of them shown on the diagram.

Looks like the sprocket bolts directly to the hub, so no separate sprocket carrier.

I understand your frustration here, I just assumed "some" people don't mind being bombarded with questions for reassurance. I see you are not ok with it and from that i wont pm you for help, but please don't turn this into a flame war and just let this section or even just this thread be a workshop one where an answer is given and an update afterwards rectifying the problems so others can get the help when it happens to them.... But then again I may have misconstrued image on what is acceptable here and if that is the case I apologise.

I have just looked at my wheel and the bearing is popping out ? well all the way out? What would you do to help diagnose the problem?

How can the bearing pop out? surely there is a spacer on the spindle that would stop it moving?

You've said the wheel feels like it is wobbling this could well be the wheel bearings this could also be other things as simple as tightening the rear spindle. I am only trying to save you money, you could buy the new bearings and not need them. You asked for opinions yet will not act on them an the check other possibilities.

A few simple checks will confirm the diagnosis there is no point guessing and ordering a part you may not need.

FRom the outside the first thing to see is a seal. This might have come out.

It is VERY unlikely that the bearing will come out on its own. There are spacers locating the inner race of the bearing, while the outer race is a fairly tight fit. Even it the bearing collapsed the chances are the races would still be firmly in place (and the outer race would likely be a real git to get out).

I would segguest you support the back of the bike in the air and hold the wheel on each side. Wobble the wheel and see if you can feel any play in it. See if you can spot exactly where this play is. If it is from the bearing then remove the back wheel and pop the seals off and check the bearings. If you are lucky you will be able to read a code etched onto the outer race of the bearing which will refer to the size.

After further investigation, the bearing has collapsed and has split into three parts. I spent most of the day ringing around with the official Megelli part number which is 61905 which bike shop providing parts say it is a invalid bearing number so I gave them another part number which was on the bearing itself which was 3188 which again the bike part suppliers said it is invalid. So I managed to get hold of one off ebay which is the same, and just in case anyone else needs it the dimensions are 25x42x9mm and the part number is 61905 with the bearing company SKF or 3188 with an American company.

Thank you for everyone's help I have learnt allot of "stuff" that I doubt I will use again but hopefully some one see's this and it helps out with part number's and locating replacement parts.

Hi

Seems an unusual size for a wheel bearing.

Seems 61905 is sometimes abreviated to 6905.

This place has plenty of different ones available online. I would suggest a 2RS (2 rubber seals) bearing rather than an unsealed one.

I did go for the rubber seal hoping it was better and in the end went for.
