After decades of having to crawl along on our motorways there is, at long last, talk of the limit being increased Thumbs Up

It would make sense, The time the limit was brought it was because of cars like the Cobra doing silly speeds on the motorway. Since then cars have got a lot safer and better equipped, better brakes better engines etc.

I think a degree of common sense should be used. But since the government think us incapable of this it must be strictly regulated.

90mph would be a fair limit I think. I would like to see vehicles get graded on the maximum speeds they can go, e.g. a BMW M3 is far safer at 110mph than a Shitbox old 1.2 fiesta pushing 90.

A system like Germany's where they impose variable limits on dot matrix boards would be a good idea, dependant on traffic conditions/weather

It's not just that, the technology was a considerabe distance from old cars (pre war) and newer cars (post).

People went on the motorway and would top out their cars which were not built to the constant speed but more to used to 30's and 40's on dual carriageways. And as such alot would break down. Plus the fact that the motorway was new. And so were the rules. Back then, they would have thought that a certain speed warped ones vision who was not used to it Smile

But yeah, people brought along their just legal race cars, and went full notch. Sure it was dangerous, but no more dangerous than now. Then you had lack of control, now you have that control, but alot more obsticles. It's relative..

Yey, let's hope that comes off....The 70mph limit on motorways was only meant to be temporary.

I do with the UK would take on some of the European ways. Take France for example. On theirs they have a speed limit that corresponds to the weather, 90kph if it's raining and 110kph if it's dry.

Just makes sense. Thumbs Up

maybe that'll stop those that like to sit in the outside lane at 70. You can see them saying to the passenger - "well I'm doing the limit!"

I seem to recall somebody getting done for that a few years back. An off duty Police Inspector was driving along behind a car that was hogging the outside (second overtaking) lane at 70MPH. Traffic, according to The Police Inspector, was tailing back and many vehicles were undertaking the car that was effectively enforcing the speed limit. I think that the car concerned was being driven by a lady and that she was charged with (and convicted of) that all encompassing offence of obstructing the highway.

[quote="VincentListen to Radio 2 if you can,

He also mentioned something I believe - that people driving slowly on fast mopving single carriageways think they are safer but they're actualy creating a dangerous situation due to the tailback and people getting frustrated and wanting to pass.[/quote]

Very intersting it was too.

At 30 20% of people hit die, at 40 its 90%.

I can see where your above comment comes from, but if you are doing the speed limit. Then the problem is frustrated people behind who need to take a chill pill.

Someone mentioned that they speed when they are late for meetings etc...
Well simple, set off earlier....
Lets face it you will be even later if you hit something.

Better to be late, than never to arrive at all.

I don't get this whole life has has to be done at manic speeds.

Probably find that they will only increase the speed limit on the toll roads to attract more people that own sports cars/sport SUVs to use them - more money in their pockets!

I do 30 in 30s & 40 is 40s.

I can see the sense in going slow and I have seen 2 children knocked over, luckily one was hit by someone doing about 15 and was okay.

(He's a friend of my son and guess what he was doing, he was playing chicken).

Motorways, I think a sensible speed limit would be about 85mph.

Open Limit roads i'm not too sure, some roads in the dales are hard to do at 50mph never mind 60.

Speed in itself does not necessarily cause accidents, but the problem is related the damage (to man or machine) which occurs at a higher speed (taking into account reaction time, speed of impact, etc.).

So, even if a large proportion of collisions occur due to texting, phone calls, general inattention or road rage, if the collision occurs at a lower speed, then there is a lesser chance of serious injury.

Frustrating for the most part, when it feels like you could get out and push your vehicle faster..

The left lane should be 70, the middle and right should be 80.

Ideally the overtake lane can be 100 if you're over taking.

Between 4 Am and 5 am it should be unlimited speed.

Speed restrictions are tosh anyway, in a perfect world we'd have a "Speed appropriate for the conditions" clause.

However, some roads I believe should have different speed limits on depending on the TIME of day.

For example, the roads near me are 30mph but at 12am-6am they are perfectly safe to do 50mph on.

At 12am-6am the motorway should be unrestricted completely, it's safe to do so in my opinion as there is a vastly reduced traffic volume. Of course reduced visibility but with proper lights you're fine.

I myself just do the speed I deem appropriate to the conditions I am in, regardless of the limit (though I never go over it by a huge amount and it's done me perfectly good so far. Thumbs Up.

You clearly have little understanding of how the motorway network works.

Goods vehicles are limited to 56mph, so what would be the point in having the inside lane limited to 70? Its an extra piece of confusion that isn't needed IMO.

Just make the whole lot 80 and have done with it.

Well not everyone wants to do 80. That's why I said keep it at 70 For them.

True, I have only ridden on a motorway 6 times ever!

From what I saw, most in the left were doing 70, the middle abot 80 and more in the overtaking lane. So I kind of said it like that.

80 would be good, as that means a true 'bustable' speed limit of around 90mph - which is more or less 100mph indicated on the speedo.

I can live with that.

80mph for what vehicles? Just "cars, motorycles and car derived vans"? LGVs as well? Buses, coaches and minibuses?

Actually, I don't really mind either way, I'm just happy to know that the rabidly vehicle-hating zealots at BRAKE will doing their nuts slightly more than usual about it. Thumbs Up

Scooters and 125's can't even do 80, and I believe there are some out there who go on motorways on them.

I guess there has to be electronic signs and stuff. Most do 80 in tje middle these days already right?

I was on the M8 and M9 on saturday on a Honda Shadow 125 (it struggled to get to 70), although I did manage an indicated 75 on a down hill section.
