2001 Aprilia Scarabeo oil leak?

I've been rebuilding a 2001 Aprilia Scarabeo 125 for about three months now; most of the engine is from 2000-model bikes, but the rest of the bike is still 2001.

Anyway, I was running it up this morning from cold, and it was reaching operating temperature when there was a pop, audible over the sound of the engine.

once I turned the engine off, and had a look, I found there was oil dripping from behind the variator, and a drop of oil hanging on two bolts (I assume they're drainage plugs) at the bottom of the engine.

Its a try clutch system, and the only thing I can think of that's behind the variator is either the engine of the transmission, and any crank pressure should be venting from the top of the engine :S

Do gaskets wear out after a time?
Any help here?

could be a knackered oil seal behind the variator ?

Could be. I hope that's all it is. :S
Just makes me wonder about the oil on the under-engine bolts.
Either way, we'll have to pull the variator off to check, I suppose.
