ive recently removed the exhaust and cleaned it out with caustic soda, after putting it back together on the bike its blowing quite badly from where the downpipe meets the silencer after reading on the internet it says there should be a rubber there? but there wasn't one when i took it off and it didnt blow anyway i was wondering if i can just put putty around it to seal it?

As far as I'm aware it's just a clamp, although my old one had exhaust tape round it, but when I took the tape off it was fine.

Putty'll be fine though, it's what I had round my downpipe where it meets the cylinder on my gp, worked fine (Y)

Don't think it was rubber though, was a gasket but not rubber.

seems strange how it was fine before but blowing after. You know im on about where the downpipe goes into the silencer and not the cylinder end? So put a load of putty round it and itl be ok?

Yeah, put some putty round it then sand it down when it's dry to make it neat, should be fine.

If it was me , I would just cut a 1 - 2 inch strip of thin alloy / tin or copper (whatever thickness it needs ) wrap it around the end of the pipe , like a sleeve , so it fits exactly when tight
Then fit the silencer over it & I assume it has a clamp, tighten it Neutral
