Hi all,

I'm wondering if my bike has a problem. I'm not quite sure of the correct function of the "FI" on the dashboard but I know that the way my Varadero USED to start was-

1 - Turn ignition on
2 - FI light illuminates, dials rotate
3 - FI light goes off
4 - start bike
5- Cold Start idle is at 1800 RPM and when warm drops to 1300

My current situation is this

1 - Turn ignition on
2 - FI light illuminates, dials rotate
3 - FI light goes off
4 - Start bike
5 - FI light stays on for about 1 second and then stays off
5- Cold start idle rises to 2000 RPM and drops straight to 1200RPM

I'm thinking maybe it is because the ambient temperature is about 10 degrees centigrade, where I live. All through the winter the light never came on when I started the bike. Is the bike resetting the idle speed by itself because of the warmer temperature and is the "FI" light telling me that the ECU is setting the idle speed?

Thanks in advance guys, just getting a bit worried as I've had the bike since October, all through the winter and now the temperature is rising again I think something may be wrong from all the winter use.

Cheers,

Fretgrinder

your owner's manual would stake more about this problem, probably tells you why and what.

Getting the haynes/workshop manual would help, but other than that, thats all i know, sorry its not much help, but could mean a potential service is due. One of the sensors ie the throttle position sensor could be off on the other hand.

Hoopefully someone will come along with the answer

This is the thing, the engine starts fine and operates normally without any problems at all. It's just weird as the idle rises to 2000rpm as normal and then drops to 1200rpm.

As for the Haynes manual, it's only just been released, so I ordered one. The owners manual doesn't really mention the light much and even less what the normal operation is.

Trawling through the internet found nothing at all. When others have talked about the "FI light" they talk about how many times the light flashes. Well, mine doesn't flash, just comes on for about 1-2 seconds and stays off all throughout my ride.

Cheers for the suggestion though mate.

its possible the TPS (throttle position sensor) has knocked it self out of tune and needs resetting. I wouldn't worry about it too much yet. When the manual comes through, have a good read.

EFI bikes are quite forgiving mind

Looks like the bike has sorted itself out.

There wasn't any problems with the engine itself as it ran smoothly, maybe the ECU just had a small hiccup for a couple of days.

On a side note, the Haynes manual turned up today and I've read the entire thing! specifically the chapters on the Fuel Injection and engine management system.

The maintenance section was extremely useful too as I can now give it a damn good clean in the hard to reach areas without worrying if I damage anything.

did the manual state anything about any of the sensors, what to check for and what the light mean when it flashes?

The manual suggested to get one of either of the following -

- Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) pocket tester
- Service Check Short (SCS) connector

You then connect this on the DLC connector at the back of the bike and it then tests the ECU an gives a readout on the FI warning light in a series of flashes. These flashes represent the fault codes and gives a table of what all the flashes indicate.

I can't seem to find either of the parts listed above, unless you have to go to Honda direct.

::EDIT::

In fact I might post about the FI warning light fault codes, giving all the reasons for the codes as well, it might come in useful for somebody in the future.
