Would anyone here that uses an iPhone find a BCF iPhone app more useful than trying to use safari? I've got the 3G and personally I find it a pain in the arse. I don't know if it's me being pedantic and I should just get on with it or if anyone else would benefit from such a convenience.

If one were available (and the powers that be would allow it) would you prefer this over using safari?

Blackwolf: I've got no idea when it comes to Android development.

I'm in the process of learning the iPhone/iPad/mac platform for work and had this bright idea on the bus home when I got pissed off with the built in web browser.

But you have got a valid point!

You can get a forum-reading application called tapatalk for phones, but requires a plug-in for the forum software and that only works with PHPBB3, while this is version 2.

Like G said, PHPBB version isn't right. Might also have problems if Korn has modified the code behind the pages as well for whatever reason.

I'd have thought an app like that would go around the website anyway. Either accessing it directly or though some sort of built for purpose service that sits on the BCF servers so it makes it easier to expand to other platforms, such as android, windows mobile, etc.

Edit: I think the forum has to do something to enable Tapatalk as well? I think that's what their website means...

The website does, but as mentioned; won't work on this forum software.
While BCF does have a few custom alterations, I'd have thought an application that could be configured to read any forum using some sort of meta data file would be generally more useful/sensible to develop.

That's true, but isn't that what tapatalk is designed to do?

There's probably a reason behind supporting PHPBB3 and higher and not including version 2?

Not sure on the differences, I tend to hide when web development is on the cards at work...

I'm talking something that's purely client-side, where tapatalk obviously isn't.

I presume modern phones should be able to handle the relatively basic parsing which is the vast majority of what it would be doing.

Oh fair enough, parsing of what exactly? Where would it get it's data? (Forums, topics, etc) Or am I just being a tad dense? (It's been a long day)

Parsing the html pages so that it can compartmentalise the useful information and still offer all the functionality possible - ie karma stuff, uploading files, while taking out most of the 'guff' - ie layout/styling, common page bits, etc.

Ahh I'm with you. In theory it's quite simple then... Sorting the wheat from the chaff as it were.

I can't imagine it being super fast using parsing. I know Kickstart does some iPhone dev, and I'd happily have a go at making it also as I've done some iPhone dev at university.

Problem is to properly develop it you need to test it on devices which means becoming an official developer. And that costs £90 a year. However I'll be a developer from university (as long as our group project uses an iPhone). I should probably uses TapTalk to see what it is like to get an idea what one for BCF would be like.

We're doing some at work, there's a device emulator that's got internet connectivity built into the mac developer software.

And for the record, it's about £60 a year for a personal subscription Wink

There is another application that works on phpbb2 and 3. The app on the iPhone/iPad/iX is called touchbb and works very well. All that needs to be done is to download a script from https://messageforums.net/1 and drop it on the forum folder.

I did this with a forum of mine that is currently in phpbb2 and working on upgrading it to phpbb3.

The script itself is free. The full app costs 59 pence but there is a lite version too

Don't need android app, perfectly fine in droid browser IMO.

A custom whole app for bcf would be pretty cool though.

I'm still on the ancient iPhone 3g... not 3gs or 4 unfortunately, and mine's a bit slow to load, but the readability and layout (especially when rating posts or replying) can be a little arduous.

iPhone apps aren't that hard to develop (if you already know C++ and object oriented ways of doing things), but the apple way of going about it is a bit convoluted and completely different.
