Hi everyone.
I have recently bought my first 2 stroke bike and find it amazingly fun....
a lot of other people at my bikeclub are not as keen as it is a 2 stroke and say i will have nothing but trouble with it.
now i have met other people and read some posts where people love the old 2 stroke engines as they are a lot simpler (mechanically) so i was just wondering if you gys prefer 2 or 4.... and give your reasons and exsperiances with either bike
Cheers guy |

Generally a two stroke engine is lighter and has less moving parts so loses less power through friction and inertia... Because 2 stroke engines fire every 2 strokes they can develop more power...
Recently the Motorcycle grandprix changed from 500cc 2 strokes to 1000cc 4 strokes and the power output is about the same.. Although as the series develops then the bikes will become more powerfull
Two stroke however need to burn oil constantly to lubricate the engine. This oil is polluting and some tight emission laws around the world have forced some two strokes of the market completely. Also due to the way the engine works, the piston rings and engine bore are prone to wear and failure.. and although the engine is pretty easy to strip and rebuild, a two stroke in comparison to a four stroke has a short engine life.
2 strokes by their nature are extremely difficult to fuel inject (which could help solve the emission problems).. The Bimota V-Due 500 was launched as a 500cc 2 stroke with fuel injection but was plagued with problems, and was later withdrawn... That saying though a new generation of the two stroke engine is being designed, This new engine is supposed to do away with the need for using oil mixed with the fuel for lubrication, and also can be fuel injected...

All my early biking was done on strokers, from schoolboy MX, through to my first road bikes and I spent a great deal of my youth playing with them, rebuilding them and tuning them; I switched to a 4 stroke as a work tool and I've never gone back.
If you leave them as the factory intended (or be very careful with your mods) and maintain them properly, oil burners are OK, but they do take some looking after.
I think the big difference is, because 2 strokes are so mechanically simple, it doesn't take much bottle to strip the barrel off and go to work with the rifflers, then get it badly wrong and end up with a grenade motor, whereas tuning a 4 stroke involves a degree of knowledge and an amount of money (you end up with the same result if you get it wrong though).
I've always stuck to 4 strokes because, as I've got less interested in tinkering with things, I don't fancy the idea of piston and ring changes that are part of regular servicing, but I would still have a couple of 2Ts in my fantasy garage. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I rode a derestricted RS125 after having my SV650 for a coupla months, I loved the RS! Nothing, nothing, nothing then when the revs start flying it all kicks in. Brilliant! It's a shame it killed itself a few days later lol...
Still, I'd love an RG500 ...I'll carry on dreamin ____________________ 2008 CBF125 [Sold] >>> 2003 SV650s [Killed] >>> 2002 CB500/'98 748 >>> 1998 GSXR600 >>> 2009 Street Triple |

I prefer 2 Stroke. IMO it's got a quicker acceleration and the smell. Oh the smell!! <3
2 stroke is just easier. Funner

This thing, is pretty much the epitome of two-stroke simplicity.
Air-Cooled, Piston ported, points ignition pre-mix drinker, it doesn't even have a head gasket... it really is the kind of bike you can strip to its component parts and put back together with the under-seat tool kit (if it still had one!) at the side of the road in an afternoon.
Its motorcycling distilled to its very essence.
I have the DT as well, which retains a lot of those kind of virtues, but is a bit more advanced.... it has an oil pump and cantalever mono-shock suspension, and a reed valve! Its a little bit more user friendly. But, 'grow' a stroker, and they loose their essence.
And its a phenomina of scales that the 'optimum' size of a single two stroke cylinder is 'about' 125cc, give or take, and the 'classic' 54x54 bore stroke dimensions.
As they get bigger and more sophisticated, they loose the simplicity and low weight that makes them so useful.
So for small displacement bikes they are great. Its hard to match the power per cc per gram, and without oil sloshing about in the crank-case or cams threatening to starve of oil in the head, the range of operating inclination the two-stroke has makes it ideal for an off-road bike, where small size, low weight and tractable power are really useful.
But for the road? Well, same advantages offer a lot for a small displacement sportster, or low cost commuter, but again, as they get bigger or more complicated, those advantages deminish.
The 'old' 500 two-stroke GP replicas showed that by the time they got that big and that sophisticated, practically they offered little over a conventional 750 four-stroke.
And for a more 'rounded' all-round road bike, a big four-stroke has more to offer. You don't tend to tip them upside down, and weight is not such an issue, and they can make enough power, and be a lot easier to live with.
So, at the opposite end of the spectrum, I have this:-
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/030_014_NPY/1-11-2011_334.jpg
16-valves Four cam-shafts, water-cooled V-4 Clylinder, twenty six years old, and its still one of the most horrendously complex engines ever shoved in a motorbike!
But refined, smooth, powerful, 'lazy' engine, its a completely different charecter.
Am I a two-stroke or four-stroke fan? I don't know. I think I just love bikes. And its horses for courses.
Two-strokes are great, and in a lightweight bike, off-road, just seem so 'right', while for a lightweight sportster, I dont think they can be beat, but for bigger bikes, four strokes just work better.
But there are anomolies, like the CB125 twin, with its 12,ooo rpm 'wail', and the old Kettle, with its water-cooled tripple....
for me, its the bike, as a whole, not the engine thats in it..... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

what is the bike in the first picture?? both very nice bikes mate.... I agree its the essence of the whole bike that counts, on the other hand if you only have a 125cc like me you dont tend to get the power of a 2 stroke if you were to get a 4 stroke... well not that i now of anyway haha,
I think untill i pass my full test this year i would prefer to have the stroke ____________________ Yamaha TZR125 x 3 Lifan LF125 14-F x 3 Jinlun 125 x 1 Honda CBR 600 F1 Honda Varadero 125cc I am now starting my Honda VFR400 NC30 Project (Still ongoing 27/02/18) Daelim Roadwin 125R |
