A thread elsewhere has lead me to this question.

I no longer display my tax disc as its been stolen 3 times since june and at 7.50 a replacement I might just as well buy a new tax disc.

the bike however is taxed hence why I don't get pulled by the automatic camera things.

My question is that I can't be the only person on a bike not displaying it?

You are not the only person, but if you do get "pulled" be warned it is an offence to not show a valid tax disk and you can be fined.

Failing to display is an offence - most cops won't notice; of those that do, most won't care.

Any officer weary enough to stick you on for it would be anal enough to find something else anyway, even if you were displaying.

Last time I swapped my tax disc for the new one, I forgot to stick the holder back on for about 2 months. Despite daily parking my bike next to cheese-munching traffic rats, none of them ever noticed.

In most vehicle stops your plates will already have been run through PNC, confirming whether the vehicle is taxed/insured/stolen. If it's shown as taxed, there'd be no reason to look for the disc.

Was a programme on TV recently one of those police shows where they stopped a couple of foreigners on a rental bike because the pillion wasn't wearing a helmet, the copper noticed the Tax disc didn't look right, took it out for inspection and turned out to be a photocopy. Copper rang the company and they explained that they were all getting stolen, so they were using a colour photocopy to avoid this scenario and while the copper did state on camera that it's not a 'valid' tax disc, he didn't persue the matter any further.

I got stopped by a cop, I was displaying my old tax disc as I hadn't been to mothers house recently to pick up the new one.

Didn't come up on their system even though id paid for it over a month before, so I had 2 weeks to produce, right pain in the ass.

Nah, you're not alone, mine lives under my pillion seat, depending on who's asking it's to stop it being nicked, or just because it looks poo.

Probably not the biggest issue a nosey copper could find with the bike if I'm honest.

Yeah I saw that Laughing

And as for the tax disc. Dont think anyone would steal a tax disc where I park but I dont think they could. My disc holder is waterproof and has 7mm lock-nuts on. So you cant even undo them with pliers or your usual 8mm Very Happy

It was a Christmas present though but I needed a new one as the old one on the bike was claimed to be waterproof but it wasn't as water had smudged all the writing on the disc and it was rusting so rusty water got in. The new one is anodised anyway Mr. Green

*TIP*

Personally, I take a good colour photocopy of my tax disc and put clear plastic (from staples - only a few quid for a big roll of the stuff) over the top of it. I then put this on the bike on one of those cheap tax holders that simply has a ring holding the screen on.

Advantages

- the numbers are the same, the bike comes back taxed if checked and through the dirty holder its almost impossible to tell its not real, so unlikely to get done for failure to display. If they did realise I'd simly tell the truth - the real one is at home to stop it getting nicked.

Another advantage is that if / when it does get nicked they wont do any damage trying to get into one of those so-called secure type holders, and i simply take another copy and replace.

an of course doesnt cost 7.50 each time!!!

well recommended! Id be very suprised if i ever got told off for that.

Scan the original and add the words "Copy - Original with owner" across it before printing. Makes it less attractive to the sticky-fingered scum. Thumbs Up
