Hi all, i am getting all the panels and tank sprayed on my 1989 ns 125f by a pro. but to keep costs down i am going to strip it myself and bring him the panels and then paint the frame myself. Now im not taking the engine out, or forks off etc so i want to paint it with a smooth finish brush paint. Anyone experienced in this field on how to go about it? i was thinking sand it down a bit to get it rough and add a primer, then the only paint i know of is hammerite smooth (red by the way), maybe 2 coats and then a couple of coats of clear laquer. Is this how its done can anyone confirm? or anybody any suggestions on a good durable paint which is better to use? thanks for any help

yeah thats pretty much spot on, rough it a bit with sand paper. 2 coats primer, 2 coats paint then laquer.

hammerite will do fine but you could probably get some better metal paint for it. but yeah, method is fine Thumbs Up

You can get a frame sand=-blasted, acid dipped and powder coated for £40..... and they look brilliant.
Brush paint and it will look like tat, believe me!
I have been painting my trials bike frame with red smoothrite for twenty five years, one coat a season, pretty thick by now!
But that doesn't have to look pretty, and as I never intend selling it, dont need to worry about resale or anything, and smoothrite is slightly 'plastic' so takes the knocks and chips of being cucked down cliffs, with or without me still clinging to it! and is easily touched up.
But for a road bike, and one thats getting attension elsewhere to pretty it up, its a hapeth fo tar job, mate, and for the saving, REALLY not worth it.
Big tin of Smoothrite, will set you back £15, and thinners so it goes on and doesn't leave plughed field ridges of brush marks, andother £8, then the brushes, and the muggering about, you are only saving a tenner or so over getting it powder-coated.....
Which will look SO much better, and be a sales feature if you ever punt the bike on, and help it last longer.... red smooth on my trials bike has lasted becouse it gets re-done every season, remember...

cheers for the tips. i Really didnt want to have to strip the bike down to the bare frame though so i think the smoothrite might have to do, do you mix it with thiners in the tin just?

Oh dear...
Right, not stripping the biek to frame, is NOT the 'easy' way to do it.
My Grand-Mother always used to tell me 'lazy-mans way is ALWAYS the longest', and the effort saved not taking the bike to bits will be punished by having to get into awkward nooks and crannies and not get paint on engine cases, shock absorbers or anything else, missing bits and generally maying the thing look like a hand painted piece of shit, rather than a lovingly restored bike.

It is NOT worth it, for the sake of a few bolts wolloping off the major chunks of bikes and sending it away to be coated.

what you get back and when you have put it back together will be a JOY you can be proud of rather than a hideouse mess you are embaressed about.

You are having teh panels done properly, no one will take any notice of how good they are if a quick clange more closely reveals a hand painted shit heap hiding beneath them!

And no, you decant paint into another pot and then thin it to suit.
